New & improved, but still half-assed, Book of Bad Ideas

Post by HIMA »

First off, excuse the new thread but I imagined those who had downloaded V1 would probably not continue following the old thread.

So V2 is done! It's extended to 50 pages and features a cool cover illustration and a link to donate to Muffs. All module specific content has been removed.

Enjoy fellow wigglers.

In the future, it's good form to update the file in the first post of your existing thread, and perhaps update the thread title to reflect the update. This will keep all discussion pertaining to your work in one place.

Also, you can attach your file directly here, so we don't have to jump to some other sketchy site to download it. Like so - nuts, it's broken. Will fix later.

BTW, thanks for the great work, again!

loooooove the "explanations" section - this has filled in some gaps for me that 6months on this board could not.

frequency modulation (FM) and phase modulation are completely unrelated, and don't sound anything alike when done at low modulation frequencies.
I would quibble with this statement. Linear frequency modulation, mathematically speaking, is exactly what you'd get by taking your modulating signal, feeding it through an integrator (like a low-pass filter), and then using it for phase modulation; or, conversely, phase modulation is frequency modulation with the modulating signal fed through a differentiator (like a high-pass filter). If the modulating signal happens to be a sine wave, it still is a sine wave after going through either filter, and then with appropriate amplitudes these two modulation techniques give identical results. That's the basis for how many of the classic "FM" digital synths operate internally. So although you don't get identical sounds with identical inputs because of the built-in filtering effect, it's easy to fake either one with the other by putting pre- or de-emphasis on the modulation signal, and they're not "completely unrelated."

I'd be interested to read this, but I'm not going to run 'setup.exe' on a Windows box to do so. Got a real download?

I downloaded it as a PDF earlier today, no problem.
