SDIY Documentary (feature length) SUBMIT YOUR VIDEOS !

Post by dmitri »

Got the OK from Ken Stone! going to AU to get interview in 2014.
I cant travel everywhere so ... Please send me a video of you & your SDIY to be included in this film ! YES YOU !!

Schedualed for release late 2014 (so you haz time )
I hope people wish to participate !

Image

Who is invited to enter?
SDIYers of all kinds, especially interested in providers of PCBs, circuit designs, panels & guys with building experience.

Don't yet have a list of questions. Wouldn't want it to all be the same ! You are free to be creative.

some guide lines:
I want to see your DIY synths & what you offer to the community, Short verbal explanation on video is great.

I understand that it can be hard for some people to make a video of the self or even audio of ones own voice & be happy with it , So if all you can muster is video of your synth thats fine, we can show the video with your name over it.

Format guide lines:
Highest quality video you can make , please send it on a CDR, DVD, or Thumb drive in the mail. please PM me for shipping address.
Please make the video with no noise or music behind it & send a separate .WAV file of music / sound / something that you would like to be heard in the background while you talk. Made with your DIY synth & recorded original by you of course.

^^^ this is so i can mix the film audio proper.

Im not offering any money for the high quality video that I'm asking for, This will hopefully be huge promo for everyone involved.

But the music / sounds will all be registered with BMI (you register your self as 100% writer). It doesn't matter if its a song or just blarbles n garbles. to sign up with BMI as a writer is free.

To be clear I will not be trying to hustle you out of any of the rights for your music . Rather, For those that make the cut (we like all types of music even even a synth demo could be used) I will work hard to make sure that it gets some shine. Basically you have a free Dmitri to promote you for a year or two & try to get your song / the documentary signed.

Also if this gets picked up its a no brainer for a sound track release.

I made one artistically guided rule, without giving too much away I will say this. I will only travel to interview people who I can buy or etch PCBs from. I gotta be able to build something from the work of a person, & show it to the camera before going to make interview.

I can't wait to see this movie!

What is it you'd like to get from the videos? Do you want us to just talk about SDIY and ourselves? Do you just want footage of us playing our systems? Showing how to do something? Do you need people to say their name and location into the camera?

I'm sure everyone has suggestions, but perhaps Bernie Hutchins (Electronotes) might be considered, assuming he is keen?

He doesn't get a lot of credit but imo he started synth diy. The amount of hours and even years he has put into synth circuit design and publishing Electronotes for very little in return is truly extraordinary.

yoiks! thank you Luka.
Thank you for that heads up Andrew I had not considered Bernie. I will send him an email (need to bite the bullet & order at least the select readings anyway).

Ray Wilson is up for it !

I might do a kick starter for a ticket to AU & back lol its not make or break though because this thing is happening for sure.

I'm open to suggestions.

The plan is to spend the better part of 2014 producing it & enter it in Sundance film fest (Documentary competition) Jan 2015.

Everyone who is interviewed will be asked to submit music for the score, So they can collect publishing royalties on that if the Doc ends up with proper distribution. (never know...crazier S^$ has happened!)

If you submit video same as above.

+1 for Bernie Hutchins. a section on the history of Electronotes and the impact its had on sdiy would be cool. he shouldnt be left out of a documentary about sdiy. i'd definitely like to see an interview with him.

Some notable people who ostensibly helped the DIY scene flourish - in no particular order and off the top of my head:

70's and 80's:
Craig Anderton (Electronic Projects For Musicians)
Bernie Hutchins (Electronotes)
Barry Klein (Electronic Music Circuits)
John Simonton (PAIA & Polyphony) RIP
Thomas Henry (Midwest Micro, Magic Smoke)
John Blacet (Blacet Research)

90's and up:
Paul Schreiber (Synthesis Technology)
Tony Allgood (Oakley Sound Systems)
Ray Wilson (MFOS)
Ken Stone (CGS)
Yves Usson (YuSynth)
Scott Bernardi (OGEE)

Sorry if I'm missing anybody!

Ian Fritz has been a DIY stalwart since the 70s, when he was contributing some very unique designs to Electronotes.

Cool!!
Not sure what his real name is but I would love to see Zthee featured.
I'll second Ian Fritz, Thomas Henry and Ken Stone.
Maybe a tribute could be added to Jurgen Haible somehow?
Old Crow is worth a mention, too.

*EDIT to add Scott Stites to the list.
