Starting on video synthesis

Post by ivyqueen »

Hey! I'm new to the forum and I've heard everyone is nice around here so I'd like some nooby advice :)

I've been meaning to start a video synth using LZX modules but I have no idea where to start. I'd like a basic system with a couple of modules to start with.

I want to be able to generate shapes/ geometrical patterns, waves, anything abstract. I have never used anything like it I am more of a painter myself but I want to get the same feel I get out of music. I won't be buying everything at once, so I want to spend around $1500 to get myself started with the basics.

Also, my bf has a 12U Eurorack that can help for modulations and sources.

Thanks in advanced for your help!!! :) I really appreciate it!

Welcome. This thread has some good advice.

It's easy to get started with a cve, vsg, vwg, and a brown shoes mixer. A happy ending kit should give you enough power to get started. Lzx speaks pretty freely with euro so it should be quick to get interesting stuff.

My recommendation for a shape synthesis system is: video sync generator, color video encoder, video ramps, 2x video wave form generator, triple video processor, triple video fader and key generator, video blending matrix, audio frequency decoder.
If you want to trim that down i'd cut the video blending matrix, audio frequency decoder and one video waveform generator because you said your boyfriend has an audio rig.

Hello and welcome!

If you want a relatively cheap way of bringing external audio into your rig for modulation (from something other than your BF's Euro rig, like a DJ mixer), the Doepfer A-119 Envelope Follower is is an alright option. But if bringing external audio in is going to be something you'll want to do a lot, I would highly recommend the LZX Audio Frequency Decoder. Even if you are using it with an audio Euro rig I still think its a must have module...again, if you want your patterns to move with the music.

Hey!!! Yes, I got the video waveform generator, color encoder, video sync generator, video interphase and a brown shoes only mixer. I am beyond excited!! Anxious to see the results and how the video modules interact with your modules.

Thanks everyone for your advice and links! You have been mire than helpful. I hope I chose well what I will be needing to begin with.

I don't know much about video synth's,
But I like what I see other people do with them.
The possibilities of the 2 of your systems combined makes my head spin! :nut: :dizzy:

It looks like you have enough to do all the necessary functions.
Fun adventures(and seizures) are ahead!

welcome to the party! 8_)

what module are you referring to by "video interphase"... maybe a voltage converter?

also if you're gonna use your boyfriends toys in the video rig.. he can use the brownshoesonly mixer in his audio rig!
