VIDEO SYNTH CHALLENGE_ 2013 -- 3D

Post by nickciontea »

:goo: :goo: :goo: :goo: :goo: :goo: :goo: :goo: :goo:
team video.. here's the challenge.

No source material. no cameras. Looking for the illusion of 3 dimensions. Deadline is March30th. A lot of time.. so putting on your thinking caps.. take multiple cracks at it and send your best in. Let's keep them under 60 seconds.

The prize will be a brownshoesonly module.

I made this patch last night. and I'm in love. Hopefully get some footage of it up later. after compression it lost a bit.. but about 20 seconds in the illusion takes hold

I like this challenge. I've been sorely neglecting pattern synthesis as of late.

Make the best video synth pattern you can that in one way or another provides the sense of 3 dimensions.. perspective, shading, lighting.

Utilize only your hardware video synthesizer with no external feed (vhs, camera, computer footage)

Put your video up on the internet before March 30th Midnight Eastern Time. All entries are allowed one vote for someone other than themselves.

So once you get something you like with some 3D action, depth, or otherwise. try to add to the pizazz with some extra color or modulation. Make it stand out! :woah:

Seems this challenge will be mostly for LZX users. although I'd be happy to see what people can do with other video generating devices/synths.

what about mixer/switcher effects, ADO, or CVI? Those would certainly offer an advantage.

I learned the basis of that from what you showed me at NAMM 8_)

Dunno if this will make sense, but if you understand the PEG, you basically understand the PAG. The first VWG (purple) controls the rate of tetrahedron "spin". The second VWG (red) controls the rate of vertical motion. The third VWG (blue) controls the rate of horizontal motion. The fourth VWG (orange/green) generates the foreground pattern (solid red and snowy red). The basic trick of getting the shading effect in this patch is using the PAG's EOF output, which is a gate that goes high during the rise phase and low during the fall phase. This changes the PWM of the fourth VWG: gate high=solid red, gate low=snowy red.

I would think using built in 3D effects, like with an ADO, would be going against the spirit of the competition.

ADO = Ampex Digital Optics

It was one of the most popular digital video effects units, that came out around 1981. You could flip images around in 3D space. You can pick them up for next to nothing on ebay once in a while now.

Great now I need an Ampex ADO! Awesome challenge nickciontea. Can I suggest having it open to audio modulators? It might limit a lot of people if it's strictly LZX. Either way I'm really going to try to push my system for this, I love the examples!

*edit* I read that last post wrong, I'm just going to assume it's open to audio modulators.

Perhaps instead of getting too restrictive, just exclude computer generated 3D and effects devices specifically designed to create 3D?

Good challenge by the way. If I get a bit of time I might actually try to make something for this one (using non-LZX modules).

I was gonna tell you to feel free to make a jones video for it.. But didn't wanna put you on the spot either!!

Yes I agree with teh computer generated content. I am also not familiar enough with various pieces of hardware to assert whether or not they qualify.

:despair:

JUST LET ME GIVE AWAY MODULES!! :omg:

Hey Nick, do the submissions have to be videos, or can they just be screenshots?

Shitty. I got this neet looking 3D grate going the other day, but there's no motion in the patch so I just took a picture.
