Eurorack Lunchbox

Post by pulplogic »

Here's a little micro case I call the Eurorack Lunchbox. It's 54HP of Euro and 54HP of 1U tiles.

The power supply runs off of a NOS Atari 9VAC 4.2A adapter and puts out +-12V and 5V at more than enough power for such a small case.
Image
The 1U Tiles that require power connect using a 3 pin (GND, +12V, -12V) shrouded molex connector like the ones used on hobby servo motrors.
Image
I hope to have a couple of these in stock at Erthenvar next week. The cases will be less than $200 including the power supply. The standard 1U Tiles will be between $10-$30. Blank 1U tiles for DIY or filling gaps will be $1ea.

Excellent design, the way you've implemented the "tiles" is quite clever, like that a lot.

This is awesome.
I'm thinking it might be useful to have a full 19" of these. z-rails, and some 1U brackets from somewhere are all I'd need. I'd much rather use up 1U for things like format-jumblers than have them eat up space in my euro cases.

I can see a whole bunch of interesting things that could be made for these tiles too.
Switches, Buttons, Feedback loops, meters...

I thought I was smart last year when I had the idea of a modular patchbay, until someone pointed out that HOSA already make pretty much exactly what I had in mind. But this tiles idea takes that even further.

Looking forward to seeing what other tiles people come up with.

really agree with detachable lid ... exactly the hp i'm looking for

any chance of another variant with a less "rugged" feel and more "sleek" design--also one that can be propped up horizontally.

oh ... forgot to say that the price point is GREAT

Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement.

M2.5 sliding nuts, 20 per rail.

Yes, maybe.

The current box was chosen for it's very low cost and rugged construction. It is from Harbor Freight, and generally I wouldn't be comfortable recommending HF quality, but this little case is tough http://www.harborfreight.com/11-1-2-hal ... 36870.html . What it lacks is a detachable lid and the interior fit and finish is less than first class. I thought about putting this out as DIY only, but these go together so fast that there really wouldn't be much cost savings.

The rail end brackets hold the frame together so any width could be made. The assembly is similar to this: http://erthenvar.com/files/case_bracket_3u_ug.pdf. The frame could be fit to a custom case or another off the shelf box. The case ID would need to be at least 6.8”. We could put all the parts in the store for DIY if there is interest.

Here is the frame:

Since the supply is under the 1U section to preserve Euro depth, the rails have been milled to provide extra finger space.

I really liked this! The 1U stuff was cool! If it wasn't so hot in there I would have stayed and played but I'm a wimp in the heat.

I would love just the 1u frame and power in the standard 84 hp 19 inch rack size. That would be swell for those 10u cases.

I like the Tile concept. I always use my modular with passive utility stuff outside the case. It would be great to have a modular row dedicated to that stuff.

Inevitably someone will cram an oscillator into one. :deadbanana:

Nice design. I don't know about a case so small, but being able to mix and match a 1U section is rather appealing.
I'm definitely curious about what specifically will be available for the tiles.

The party's just starting.

These should be at Erthenvar next week:
Passive Mult
Passive attenuator A or B Taper
DC Out
Unity Gain Summer 3 to 1
Dual Invert
FSR (Gate and CV)
Normally Open Switch
Blank Panels in black, silver, yellow, red and orange

Image

Ready, but waiting for parts:
MIDImplant http://www.midimplant.com
Attenuverter
Passive Diode OR
Comparator

The Yellow Box has the rails set slightly deeper to accommodate the tubes.

Here are the tile dimms:

Thank you! Though the Lunchbox and 1U Tiles are PulpLogic's (John's) designs.
