I've got a 4-space boat. Bought used. Everything works, except the -15v power module died. It's not available from any distributor that I can find.

It took me weeks just to get someone from Buchla to respond. I was finally told to send $52.50 to their PO box and they would send a replacement module.

Yesterday, I got this little email from Buchla:
We received your check for the replacement (-15volt) module, but the check didn't make it to our bank, thanks to a USPS failure. Could you please cancel and replace the check? (In the future, we'll hand deliver checks to our bank.) Sorry for the inconvenience.

I assume you have a qualified technician ready to perform this replacement.
So I went to the bank and put a stop-payment on the check. The bank charged me $34.

Thanks Don! Thanks a lot!

I don't know of any other business that would deliver cheques to their bank via the post

They weren't willing to eat the $34 for canceling the check?

I recently had them lose a check same story which I replaced. However, I don't think Don has done anything wrong here so what is the beef? You were sold a broken boat by someone. Typically B&A fixes their gear with no problem. You should have probably spent $20 to mail her in and they would likely have fixed her gratis. Pretty harsh post IMHO. Hopefully you are just pulling our collective fingers Mr. Yellow Module!

I think his point is that B&A lost his check-granted $34 aint much in the grand scheme of things.

Yes and no. If I were Metasonix I would have made the point that they lost the check and were responsible for the canceled check fee. But maybe that's just me.

well, isn't the real issue, how can the bank charge $34 to put a stop-payment a check??? Is it all still done by hand?
:fap:

(but yes, if you received it, and THEN it was lost after it was in your posession, it's your responsibility, the other party fulfilled their obligation, eg... hey, thanks for sending the module...it was cool, but I lost it, please send another, kthx bye)

Right, the real issue is the ridiculous fees banks are trying to get away with these days. If it was worth his time, I'm sure Eric could call his bank manager and have the charge reversed.

But you can't really assume Don would know your bank would gouge you. Everyone's arrangements are different. My bank wouldn't charge me anything to stop a check, though I happen to have been at the same small bank for 20 years, maintain a decent balance, and occasionally drop by to take my bank manager out to lunch. The more-flies-with-honey approach to personal finance.

Cheers,
Brian

It's the age-old dichotomy. On one hand you have the Subotnicks of the world surprised that Mr. Buchla is trying to turn a quirky, artsy thing like a SFTMC commission into a business, and then you have normal people complaining that "the laconic Mr. Buchla" (NY Times) is hardly a businessman.

Don once lost a $6k deposit check from me.

Another check came back with what appeared to be a "to do" list scribbled on the back.

This doesn't surprise me....
