It's hard to say without a closer look at the names on the controls and jacks, but that looks awesome! It definitely looks like a vector monitor setup of some kind.

The left side looks like a Tektronix X-Y display (or a clone of it).

The company still exists but just makes professional LCD monitors. No sign of what that item was. It has the feel of a piece of test equipment for a government contractor.

Also, yes, the X Y and Z inputs on the back are summing. I need to drive them with at least 5v though. They seem to be high bandwidth but all I'm testing with is ramps into video encoder into video IN & oscillator into voltage bridge to amplify, to the other inputs. It looks like freq. response is rolling off around where the '074 usually does, so it's hard to tell.

Check out the application notes -- it looks like this device was pretty much pulled directly from it. It's got several cards on the inside with these epoxy-potted modules on them -- beyond these 'black boxes' it looks fairly straightforward. The good news is that it looks to be all voltage-controlled already so modding this thing for external control should be simple.

I sent a quote anyway, if they have them I might have some idea of what to do with 'em...

Wow, it would be cool if a module was made using em. I think a x and y ramp rotator could have many uses, not just vector rescanning!

Hell, it could probably even have some uses for audio waveshaping.

i just got a reply from chip dealers..... they don't have any left.... :bang:

still, the chip pdf is a nice reading. it explains a logic begind a 3d image rotation in a form of a short abstract.

My partner Ed sent me some notes on this. You could do what this chip does (XY ramp rotator) with the waveshaper portion of our Video Colorspace Modulator module and a 4-quadrant multiplier (something we have on our development list.) We tried a patch out like that recently, but only had the 2-quadrant multipliers (VCAs) in our TVFKG modules to use. Here was the result, driving a vector monitor:

This is incredible.

So, how would one go about colorizing this stuff?

It would be interesting if there was a way to finally bring in vector information into a digital domain, perform real-time segmentation etc like you can do with point cloud data from the kinect...

You could then use a feedback loop like the one above to generate geometry that is then rendered with shaders etc.

Yeah. A few of us have been looking into using FPGAs to do whatever data transformations into a framebuffer, at which point you could send it to multiple outputs or synthesize a color composite video image, etc. If you wanted to keep it in the analogue domain, the simplest way is really to rephotograph it and colorize that image.

Also there are 3d vector monitors, used in older arcade machines. That could be a possible source for colorized vectors. They're pretty rare.

Side note: I've added voltage control to almost all the parameters on this piece! Haven't yet stiched it back together. Works brilliantly tho!

You can run it through modules in the same system to do the analogue colorization. If you're rescanning that means you need two source cameras (or a video feed and a camera). There was a period in the late 70's at EVL when they did a lot of work with generating vector graphic animations using a computer and vector monitor, that were then colorized using the Sandin Image Processor. Such as this collaboration between Tom DeFanti and Dan Sandin:

Hi. Late to the party! What IC are you speaking of? The link gives me some random diodes.

Your machine looks very similar to this one:

Yes, internally it is all OEI modules on daughterboards. It's just branded Data Check. I don't know if there were other manufacturers or not.

There is the documentation, also at one time I had the OEI 6125A datasheet (which is the rotator IC) and it has a 3-axis rotation diagram in there as well. I can't seem to locate it online any more but only just briefly tried to look - if you can't find it i'm sure I have it saved somewhere.

Fantastic thanks for all the details! Everything except the video scan processing can be done in the audio domain, and I'm thinking of some "slow scan" tricks to get primitive video in as well. The PDF you attached here is definitely helpful.
