Seeking advice: Penrose patching

Hey all,

Newbie question incoming

Can anyone help me get started with the Penrose? I sometimes patch it up by experimentation / guessing and get results, but I don't actually know what is happening. I almost always use my systems to make atonalish, rhythmic stuff but I want to add a melodic layer now and hoping to really get my head around the penrose module this weekend so I can experiment with layered melodies. The tactile buttons on this are really great to use! The problem is, I dont know what I am doing to reliably get results.

Would you mind helping me understand how to patch it? Even just a basic patch will help me grok it. Tom posted some basic patches for the DDSR on YT that opened up a whole world for me, so now hoping some advice on this quatizer will do the same. I know you all are advanced patchers so I hope this question isn't too basic/annoying.

I don't actually have my penrose in my bug system but a fun starting point would be BBV and one of the DDSR D to A voltages into the penrose's inputs. BBV supplies the basic sequence and DDSR via attenuator adds semi-random variations and the initial control works as a transpose.

Would you quantize the VCO using the EFM input? or is there a better/standard way?

Send that signal, or similar to what soup described, into the vco v/Oct input! Select the scale you want on the Penrose keyboard

Got it. I thought BBV would go to v/Oct to provide sequence?

Could do - but put BBV into Penrose into vco v/Oct is the best traditional way. BBV is the sequencer whose output you want to quantise then feed the quantiser out to vco
