2130 VCO (finally a larger VCO!)
2130 VCO (finally a larger VCO!)
Ready to produce now..
Wonderful TINY chip from Sound Semiconductor SSI2130 [here's a thread about the chip]
Great tracking & temperature stable
LinFM is being relabelled as Lin TZ (Through-Zero)
Shape (and Wave output) sweeps from Triangle through Saw to Pulse/Sqr (jumper setting - narrow pulse or 50/50 Square)
Not going for all the bells & whistles possible with the chip & not tricking out with CV inverters etc - but should be a nice solid 2FW design.
Not too far off with it now - panels ordered, PCBs to order shortly.
***EDIT: details up online now & just making up the first batch at the moment::::

Here are some sounds - I always find it quite hard to determine how best to approach such demos, so added a variety of bits!

Looks great! Quad sine + this

Re: 2130 VCO (finally a larger VCO!)
So it's quite different (sounding) to the compact vco with the new chip and through zero capabilities? I guess that's desirable for richer FM modulation tones? Eager to hear more about it!

2 V/Oct inputs?
Also, any clocking jumpers/pads on the back, or was that something specific to the circuit / chip on the Chirper?

Re: 2130 VCO (finally a larger VCO!)
The thinking with the two 1V/Oct inputs (well, other than right panel feel) was that sometimes you might want a regular source from, say, a keyboard/seq but then also an accurate one for transposing.northerntao wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 2:43 pm 2 V/Oct inputs?

No clocking or output whatnots on the back, no. Just two jumpers - one for the mentioned Sqr/Pulse selection and another for AC/DC coupling for the linear FM -- I've almost invariably kept it set to AC coupled (which the datasheet calls Phase Modulation rather than Frequency Modulation).

Yes, I should do some demo sounds sometime. The pitch tracking coupled with the non-detuning nature of the linear FM is very good when playing a pair of them.
Re: 2130 VCO (finally a larger VCO!)
I wondered what was going in those last 4 spaces. 2 for me please.

Ahh, that makes sense - can sequence one and wiggle the other. Better than trying to passively “mix” two bananas!

Digging that 2 x 1v/Oct situation there, Tom. Nice one.

Re: 2130 VCO (finally a larger VCO!)
hmm, im missing PWM on this a bit, which also isnt available on the compact osc. is it possible w this chip?

Yeah, I hear you - given my sort of layout approaches I'd initially thought on PW(M) but then felt that wave-mod was more interesting..
Possibly could have squeezed something in, but wanted to keep it spacious & relatively simple.
It absolutely is possible on-board with the chip.

Re: 2130 VCO (finally a larger VCO!)
That uncluttered approach is nice but kind of begs for various utility modules. Things like a comparator (for PWM). Perhaps dual or triple or combined with another function.

Re: 2130 VCO (finally a larger VCO!)
You've always wanted a multiple comparator
And I've *still* not done one ;(
Worth noting the powers onboard the SSI2130 chip - it has multiple wave outputs AND an onboard waveform mixer. I did wonder about implementing that & maybe will do another design sometime, but for now the onboard mixer is used to fade through the Tri/Saw/Pulse waveforms.

Re: 2130 VCO (finally a larger VCO!)
This is something that I’ve excitedly been waiting for since first reading that a new larger VCO was in the works. Nice clear layout and a great feature set without being crowded. Pleased to see that a Sine output was included in addition to the other waveforms that available from the shaped output. No doubt, this is going to be a great addition to the available lineup. Really looking forward to this being ready for purchase.
Would love to hear a demo of it in action!

Can’t wait till these are available!
