2xSAM - Dual Stereo Attenuator-Mixer in 4 HP

Post by igorrr »

2xSAM is 4 HP Dual Stereo Attenuator-Mixer
- Separate stereo outputs for attenuator duties
- Stereo mixer output
- Optional 5x gain for each input to raise line levels to modular amplitude (jumpers on the backside)
- Clean (low noise and distortion) performance
- Right inputs are normalled to Left inputs for easy mono operation
- AC coupled inputs
- Several 2xSAMs can be chained together or with other HN stereo modules via sockets on the back side
2xSAM’s total mix stereo output can be internally sent to the Isolator module, or can be received from OUT, PanMix, PanMix Jr, 3xStereo Mixer, or another 2xSAM.
35 mm depth, +-27 mA
90 USD

Section 1 works as a stereo attenuator and adjusts the send level for the BigSky.
Section 2 works as a stereo return level control and is set for 5x times amplification to bring BigSky’s line levels back to the modular amplitude.
The mix is recorded from section 2 outputs. Total mix outputs (1+2) are not used.

I need one of these immediately. With the amount of stereo filters and other modules out now I'm surprised nobody else is making something like this. Take mah :75:

I've ordered 2xSAM exactly for the integration of some Strymon pedals (module not arrived yet). I would like to use it in an Intellijel 7U case which came with the audio jacks board v2. Out of curiosity and based on this topic 2xSAM Praga expander -> might it be possible to connect the IN / OUT section of the 2xSAM to the both sections of the audio board so that the 2xSAM can also use those jacks for send and receive?

(hopefully this screenshots from Intellijel are not forbidden here)

There should not be any restrictions for my modules to be chained with other brands if custom cable is made.

I have not tested the chaining to the Intellijel audio board yet. But 2xSAM works like a dream with my Strymon pedal! Thanks a lot for this module! :hail:

Hi Igor,
You're on the roll with these amazing new modules coming out in the past few months! Well done.
Q - 2xSAM looks really interesting.
Could you elaborate a bit on what's being used in the 5xGain circuit for the amplification?
I also wonder if it's low-noise/distortion enough to amplify some studio-grade compressors/eqs.500 bento equipment to modular levels, as I'd like to integrate them into my eurorack system?
cheers.

The gain will not add any noticeable noise of its own. It will amplify whatever it got on the input, so if the input is clean – the output will be clean too.

This looks great, like a scaled-back and slimmer 3x Stereo Mixer, but with separate outs. Do the pots have a linear or log response?

2xSAM is targeted for audio use, thus the log response.

Is it possible to get 10x (instead of 5x) amplication of a mono input by patching it into l1 input and from l1 output to r1 input?

Yes, you can do that, but it will give more than 10x gain. Anyway you have volume control knob to set the desired gain with this patch.

Great igor!
will that extra pass thru the preamp add any additional noise or will the snr be as in the input signal?

And when will the 2xsam and 3xmia be available at schneiders again?

There will be no added noise of its own – snr of the input will not be worsened.
I will ship 2xSAMs and 3xMIAs in a couple of weeks.

The 2xSAM seems to me a good module to use for parallel compression (in combination with a stereocompressor). Anyone tried this with 2XSAM?

Where can I find a user manual or reference guide, specs or anything to get a look at the rear ports/jacks/etc. ? Almost none of the HN modules seem to have user guides available save for Super Sawtor, FM AID, and FX AID (XL).

I ask also as a happy owner of an FX AID XL. I found the user created guide and website. Where do you all go when you need to check specs on the 3xMIA or 2xSAM... ?

2xSAM has “IN” and “OUT” connectors on the backside to interface with other HN stereo modules.
Product page describes how gain is set with jumpers:
“If jumpers are not installed (placed on one pin only by default) the max gain is 1x. When the jumper is properly placed on both pins – the gain is 5x. There are four inputs thus four jumpers. Each jumper is relevant to its channel.”

Thanks igorrr for the quick response and info. That is what I wanted to know. Appreciated.

It might be worth it to have a photo / illustration / schematic of some kind on the product pages that don't have user guides. For the sake of your time more than anything 8-) I love responsive and communicative manufacturer/builders, but don't want to bother them if I can just look at a wiring diagram or something.

Its not just you though. I've been doing a lot of research looking at options for interfacing with external studio, line and instrument level equipment. Very few of the smaller companies have this information available.
