3x MIA – Mixer – Inverter – Attenuator

Post by igorrr »

Image
Here it is: 6 HP module with dual concentric knobs, each of them is attenuverter (zero at mid position). If nothing is plugged to A or B inputs – this channel gets normalled to +5 V, thus we have six variable DC sources to offset our signals. There are three groups, each of them has separate output. Switches give us possibility to mix group 1 to group 2 and group 2 to group 3, so we can get 2-2-2, 4-2, 6 channels mix configurations.
Depth – 3.5 cm
Current draw +- 80 mA from both lines.
MSRP – 100 USD.

Quite cool idea to take a utility item to the next level

I need 2 extra mixers in my rack, this looks like an awesome addition.

Also, great layout, clean and solid. Guess it will also be available in Europe ?

Neat design, like the dual pots.

Question; do the attenuverters easily hit true zero at center? Do they have a center detente that helps with this?

I ask as my Triatt works pretty well in this regard, with my Shifting Inverting Signal Mixer it's really difficult to hit zero, and that makes it less useful for me.

Thanks!

It'd be cool with something like this if one pair were straight attenuators. Still this is exactly what I wanted in a rack I'm planning so yeah I'm in line.

Brilliant, this much power in 6hp means even vca-shunning noobs will buy one! :hihi:

I agree that it's hard to get the tactile click on the SISM to be exactly 0 every time, but it does have a detent. If anything, it will be easier to dial in 0 on these, since:

A. The knobs are bigger (not mini-pots like on the SISM)
B. There is (I assume) no detent, so you can do fine tuning instead
of just locking onto "zero" at a certain distance from the center

I do agree, though, that the Triatt does a really good job with this - being able to switch between attenuversion, attenuation, or both, is priceless.

Wow, super clever and the ergonomics look good to boot!

I'm also curious about how one bolts two pot shafts to the faceplate, or if the inner one will be a little wiggly

I have a pair of Att-Off tiles by Pulp Logic with the same concentric-circle scheme, and the inner pot is perfectly steady.

I have the same 1u tiles and they are sturdier than most of my euro pots.

Regarding the “zero hit” at mid position: knobs response is curved from linear to expo like to make it easier to balance in this mid position. It is possible to get -60 dB of level reduction in there, but accuracy is required. Attenuverter is not suitable for half a second twist from full volume to zero, as ordinary attenuator does. And there is no center detent, which helps with middle position, but spoils the smooth transition “through zero”.
Design compromises are inevitable. As for example: with once section of 3x MIA the user can adjust the polarity and level of some LFO and smoothly shift it in both DC directions to nail the desired modulation, which cannot be made with attenuator and inversion switch.
It vastly expands modulation possibilities for all the modules with just CV inputs. And having all 3 sections at hand, can be used to easily control several different modules from one spot.
The pots are no way “wobbly” and overall constructions is very solid.

It's hard to use a polarizing CV mixer without LEDs

yes, that´s what I thought as well. Please put some bipolar LEDs in there and it´s perfect. Maybe on the left-hand side in the corners of the squares, don´t know if this would be possible though.

LEDs will not give precise information anyway, and DC shifting is so straightforward - turn to the “+” side and it moves up, turn to the “-” side and it moves down.

true, I´m using a Mutable shades and got used to look at the LEDs, but maybe this just became a habit.
