Doepfer A-112: Who said Doepfer was boring?

Over the last few months I have sold most of my non-Doepfer modules and replaced them with Herr Doepfer's offerings. I am so glad I did. Really enjoying my 18U system now!

Doepfer is often slammed for lack of digital VCOs, for being utilitarian, bland and what not... I thought I'd share some of the sounds I've patched recently using the (IMHO) highly underrated mighty A-112 Sampler / Wavetable Oscillator...

The first example features two A-112s.
The second one is one of the channels on its own. Reminds me of a slap bass.
A-171-2 does the wonky Krellish timing / envelopes. A-149-1 provides random notes and switches wavetables. I synthesised these wavetables using Super Miniwave Generator (available in another thread on this forum), loaded them via MIDI Dump. A-106-5 and A-101-6 do the filtering.

This third example uses a few other bits. Again, two A-112s, an A-110-2 for the solo, A-160-2 clock divider, Noisering and PGM 4x4 (for chords). Same filters + A-124. Self running, a bit of tweaking of the reverb and one of the filters towards the second half.

Since I found very few audio examples before buying my A-112s I thought we could use this thread to post interesting sounds you can get from this fella for those thinking of buying it. Do it!

The first two are cool for generating your own wavetables. Super-miniwave is really deep and looks scary, but I've managed to get the sounds I want in about 15 minutes. I actually think it's amazing! However, for some reason MIDI dump didn't work on the Super-miniwave and the A-112 Waves. So I've used the former to create and save a wavetable in .256 format then opened it in A-112 Sample Dump Tool which worked great! I'm sure it's my Avid C400 drivers. I'm on Windows 7 BTW. Hopefully this helps someone.

That third example is beautiful. Nice to see someone utilize the Synthwerks PGM 4x4 too. I want one bad.

I have only used my A-112 as a sampler. These wave patches sound real nice. Thanks for sharing.

MMF1 and DMF2 are self oscillating in a feedback configuration with the A-112 in pitch shifter mode on the return connection. Optomix is providing contours to the sound. I think the noise comes from the A-112 dirt, it has been so long I don't remember. Wogglebug provides gates.

Been thinking about a second A-112 for a while, it'll eventually happen when my mixing situation improves.

I use mine mostly for pitch shifting or sampling and pitching.. the grit is awesome.. tried wavetabling a recorded sample, turned out very nice!

It's a shame though that you cannot cycle the waveforms by hand via knob.. You still need a constant +5v on the gate in and I used my polarizing mixer for wavetable morphing since Ch1 doubles as an offset generator.

..Or am I doing it wrong?

Well, it loops in the sense that the feedback amount is as close to 100 percent as it can before the A-112 descends into completely noisy chaos (which it eventually does at the end), and I was careful to be hand playing parts who's lengths were in equal divisions of the loop length. Sorry, no cool A-112 mods to report.

Here's another recording of mine featuring A-112 as bass, also multed to A-188-1 (512 stages) for some Karplus Strong action. 100% Doepfer.
Everything is sequenced off a single A-155+A-154 in Pendulum mode.
The snare is an A-110-4 slightly modulated with white noise at its exponential FM. Envelope provided by A-143-4 > A-132-3. What a simple patch to make a snare, no filters needed, I discovered it by accident. Yes, the snare is also triggered by the A-155.
It's self running, with some knob tweaking here and there. The A-112 is most prominent around 00:42.
No multitracking, recorded in a single take on a Mackie CR 1604, stereo master edited on Pro Tools.

Some great examples vytis. I agree the Doepfer stuff is far from boring. Attenuators for most inputs on most modules (really useful) and some great sounds across their range.

See my second post at the top of this thread. I have used Super Miniwave to generate my wavetables. In all of my examples the A-112s were loaded with such synthesised random waveforms. But I have found that just about anything works, really! Amazingly inspiring module and dead simple to use as a wavetable oscillator.
