MI Clouds alternate firmware feat. the OliVerb

Post by mqtthiqs »

Hi everyone!

I am beginning some work on an alternate firmware for Clouds, with a few improvements; let me submit to you a preliminary version for test and feedback. It adds to Clouds an extra secret mode which is a reverb I'd like to call the OliVerb :) It is essentially the built-in reverb, with more controls.

Here is a small demo clip:
http://soundcloud.com/mqtthiqs/oliverb-test/s-uxX1e

It can be accessed like the other factory playback modes, by holding the Blend button for 4 seconds and pressing it again until the last three LEDs are lit. In this mode, the input goes directly through the reverb and to the (stereo) output; the reverb parameters can be controlled by the knobs and CV inputs:
- Position: pre-delay amount (from 0 to about half a second),
- Size: reverb size (i.e. feedback, can be driven to self-oscillation),
- Density: density of the diffuser (from scarce to dense),
- Texture: dampening (from dark to bright),
- Dry/Wet: well... dry/wet.

All other controls (pitch, freeze, ...) are left unspecified. Their behavior might... no, will change in future versions.

To update your Clouds, download this file:

https://github.com/mqtthiqs/mutable/rel ... clouds.wav

and follow the instructions on how to upload the firmware in the manual.

Any comment will be most welcome! How do the knob range feel? What feature is missing? How should I use the unassigned pots?

The pitch could be used to add a shimmering octave up :-)

Neato. Looking forward to trying this out.

I love all this mutable hacking lately. Wish I had the skills to do it, as I'd love to swap out one of the peaks alternate trigger modes for the hidden 'bouncing ball' one instead.

Yeah it does, but my thinking was that the reverb size been feedback that might feed back into itself to create the shimmer

pouh.....
:yay:

i much like pitch effects on reverbs......and as it is the clouds which has pitchshifting...... probably give it a try ;)

I also MUCH much much like EQ ing on reverbs ( refering here to my experiences with SPACE ):
i much like full blown low frequenzys with much thinned out mids and some high Freq still there but with short times.
I also much like High freq only.......
if you could, .......and want, to put some fancy EQ thing onto one Knob, not just the common LP-HP thing, .....it would be überawesome !

ohh wait, while i´m at it:
a delay with predelay, both clocked would be überawesome too. :hihi: ...no reverb though . ;)
you know that dotted 1/8 delay with a undotted 1/8 predelay.
or that 1/8 delay with a 1/16 predelay.
Man, that would be something. ....I gladly pay you for such a delay.
sorry, not trying to overstrain you.....just some exuberance

I'd love it if the pitch shifting was still available. If I want cascading pitch-feedback in the style of Eventide and Strymon I can patch it myself, or maybe it could be a secondary function for the Blend knob?

Could the Freeze button/input be a reverse effect, or would that not be possible given that this new firmware is based off the built in reverb?

If all of that is possible and happens then I'm getting a second Clouds ASAP.

So I see that the Pitch control is "unspecified" per the notes above...yet, I'm hearing a clear change in the reverb pitch when modulated.

Is this control actually assigned afterall?

Yes. Pitch pitch-shifts the pre-delayed sound. It was easier to leave it like it was than to disable it. However, the pitch shifting is not part of the reverb loop, so it will sound quite disappointing I guess.

The same way, feedback is a feedback loop on the whole signal path (including pre-delay).

Actually, I'm kind of enjoying it!

It does give sort of shimmer-y effects....kind of a glass harmonica effect with pitch up at 3 o'clock.

Pretty stoked on this update!

So psyched you're already on this. Pre-ordered so I won't have mine till april (or whenever?) but will probably immediately load this.

So did anything have to be sacrificed functionality wise to make this or is there a good amount of headroom on clouds?

You and bennelong.bicyclist are the reason I'll probably never get rid of a single mutable module. On top of oliver's random surprise firmware updates for everything these jawns are priceless.

Looking foward to install this in my pre-ordered unit... I would like to know as well if some features will be sacrificed for the new reverb features...

Merci Mat!!

Was already Om the verge of buying an intellijel audio interface to use clouds as a send effect for my productions but this may tip it over the edge finallly.

Very well possible, but I'd prefer a real freeze (cut the input and unity gain feedback for sustained infinite decay) to distinguish it from the Erbe Verb function-wise.
Is it possible to add low /hi cut ?
I'd like this too... I'll try to add a three band shelving EQ yes.
shimmer verb pleeeeeeeesssseee..........
I'm still reading on reverb design ATM, still not sure how to implement this shimmering effect. Anyone wants to chime in?
Almost tempted to replace my Erbe-Verb with another one of these
Don't! It really doesn't sound as good (yet?) :)
So did anything have to be sacrificed functionality wise to make this or is there a good amount of headroom on clouds?
No, nothing sacrified at all! My rationale for the moment is to add features without suppressing anything. We'll see what happens when space runs out. I actually have no idea how much is left on the devices, I don't have a JTAG programmer yet and haven't delved into that...

Really? Just added functionality without subtracting anything?
