[Project] Turing Machine Expander 3: Vactrol Mix Expander

Post by Tombola » Thu Jan 22, 2015 6:45 pm

I've been meaning to publish this for ages, so here it is...

- A 4 in, 2 out vactrol matrix mixer controlled by the Turing Machine
- An alternative to the Voltages expander (connects to the Gates output)
- Creates rhythmic patterns or shifting drones from any audio source
- Great for feedback loops
- DC coupled, so you can also rhythmically cut up DC sources; LFOs etc.
- Inspired by Grant Richter's Cadavre Exquis voltage controlled mixer.

All the details are on Github:
https://github.com/TomWhitwell/TuringMixExpander
UPDATE: May 2015 revised, finalised PCB now live in Github

* Patch Ideas

Shame it can't be added with the Volts expander in place

On the git hub its noted you could hack it together. Looks like it pairs fantasticly with the radio modules

Why would you do that ?
I really can't see any use for this whatsoever.
Honest...
No, move on, nothing to see here.
Bloody Vactrols
Gah...

Get back to Brockwell Park Tom ;)

Suffice to say, I'll be all over this like a rash, and Thonk will be needing to stock up on the ole Vactrols very soon...

This is rad!!
Too bad my TM is already over-expanded (including bytes). I will end building a second one just for this..

I have a second TM in my rack ready and waiting for this.

Haha! NEATO.

I see this being really nice for screwing up DC signals, or getting LFO shapes that are rhythmically compliant with the rest of your patch while still having some chaotic and changing aspects.

Coming next from Music Thing Modular is a random looping vactrol mixer that is inspired by Grant Richter, if you like that kind of thing. And the PCB is orange.

(FYI Tombola the Soundcloud embed isn't working, page not found on Soundcloud.)

Well, I will probably need to build a third TM. And maybe a fourth ?

Marvellous idea. Glad I held onto the original faceplates.

No way to use it with Voltages?
I mean, that would be a great, nice big panel :D (all in one, I mean)

Added a post about this to the FAQ:
https://github.com/TomWhitwell/TuringMi ... es-and-vme

I think a ribbon cable with 3 sockets on it might be the answer. But I haven't tested it, don't know if the driver chips in the backpack would put out enough current - might be fine.

Tom, probably you're already aware of it, but the mods to the TM necessary to use bytes expander by Circuit Shaman included swapping the fuse on the backpack with a better spec'd one.
EDIT: yes, obviously you are aware of it

BTW, I've just discovered on his site that there's another expander in the making, Switches.
So now we are at four expanders in total.
You know what would be cool? Exploiting your clever modular design and developing an über-backpack capable to stand all the expanders, so to have a Monster Turing Machine.

Yes, or do what is the tradition around here. Have four or five TM's. 8_) :sb:

I have two fully expended and I need to start on a third it looks like.

Working on it, as well as new modules that use the turing machine expanders ;).

@Tombola
: PM sent. This expander looks really cool and I think there is more than enough room for both expanders (vactrol mix and switches) to play together.

Thanks! It kind of went public sooner than I expected, those links were for people to pre-order during NAMM that saw the modules in person. Demos and manuals will all be up early next week and then I will do an "official announcement" in the churro-rack forum :D

So Windspirit - will this expander be compatible with the other expanders?

It'll be like the One Turing Machine to rule them all. :sadbanana: :nana: :deadbanana:
