Jazz with electronics

Post by skery »

I've searched around a bit, but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for, I got a bug in my head to try and find some good jazz with electronics. I'm thinking good bepob stuff, like 70's miles, with a normal trio/quartet, but with electronics, not jazz fusion, but more modular type noises as a bed, complimenting the acoustic trio... Not really synth as a solo instrument, free jazz, or avant-garde, though again that's good, just not what I'm thinking of.

I know some of the Herbie Hancock stuff, later funky Miles,

Is there anybody current doing cool things with a modular, in a jazz construct?

any ideas?

I can think of one thing that is close, Dick Wood ' Not Far From Here - it’s a bit more free jazz, but I like the electronics underneath it...

Slagsmalsklubben is probably not what you're looking for, but maybe it'll have some value to you?

Thanks for the great suggestions! Like you both said, not what I'm looking for exactly, but gotta say, I'm quite intrigued by both, but especially Slagsmalsklubben, cool stuff! Definitely going to look more into both. Keep'em coming!

A friend just sent me peter Evans, that was what started this whole search. I haven't given it a proper listen yet so didn't mention it. Great suggestions so far thanks! I'll be checking into them all

I have several older MMW albums, love them, especially combustication.

Not current and maybe not exactly what you're looking for but Anthony Braxton has done some great collaborations and duos with synth wizard Richard Teitelbaum ( MEV )… Your post reminded me I've been meaning to track down more of these.

I used to like the Chick Corea Elektric Band back in the '80s. A lot of their stuff is probably more "fusion-y" than you're looking for, but if you dig a bit:

The guitarist David Torn does a lot of really cool electronic stuff, looping, etc. He even put out a couple electronica albums under the name "Splattercell". His guitar effects rack has all kinds of interesting shit in it, used to excellent effect on the album "Cloud About Mercury" from 1985 (ECM). His latest album (AFAIK) is called "Prezens" (ECM). He also put out an album with (King Crimson bass player) Tony Levin and (Yes drummer) called "Levin Torn White" which is really good. Finally, if you can find a copy of the album "Polytown" with (the late, great bassist) Mick Karn and (the very strange drummer) Terry Bozzio, snap it up. It's awesome and very very weird.

I don't they are quite what the OP is looking for (but for the opposite reason as the Chick Corea suggestion I made above) but yeah...Konk Pack is awesome. I'm a huge Thomas Lehn fan...I'd put him under "non-idiomatic improvisation" rather than jazz, but he's one of the best improvisers the synthesizer has ever seen.

to contribute to my own thread,

after playing a bunch of this stuff on spotify it recommended Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet... good stuff, some electronicy things in there.. and Skerik is a great Sax player. good groovy beats... really like this

to make things even more interesting - Skerik - is my last name. I've heard of this guy before, i don't believe its his given name, but not sure... I've have an album from Tuatara (with Peter Buck of REM) with him...

I recommend listening to Even Parker's electro-acoustic ensemble.. it changed my approach to music completely.

A lot of electronic processing and sound design in a contemporary jazz setting. The ECM catalogue has a lot of these gems in it.
