Sequential Switch / Clocked Random

Post by BugBrand »

Things don't usually move quickly, but this project feels like it can.
I'd wondered a little how to do a seq-switch (mentioned a few times in the things I should make thread) - always a balance of how to fit something effectively & efficiently into a module design. I came up with an approach, then had 4 hole spaces remaining - wondered whether a little divider or perhaps some sort of clocked random.. went with the clocked random in the end.

Whipped up a simple-but-effective schematic - so much comes down to thinking ahead - turns out it could be achieved relatively efficiently.. A clocked counter controlling a switch IC (so that the I/O can be any signal) + a little supporting circuitry. For the Clocked Random I used a digital shift-register, 3 XNOR stages and a pair of 4-bit D-to-As - kind of similar to the heart of the DDSR, basically me trying to make something small which wouldn't take up half of a DDSR. The noise is quite periodic (chug/repetition audible at audio rates) but fine for the circuit simplicity. It should be very useful at sub-audio rates!

So, hopefully I'll get this into production soon. Just wanted to share the feeling of excitement - rare for projects to move quickly ;)

[will likely change the In(Out) // Out (In) around just so that the colours feel more in line with my regular ways -- they're bi-directional so can be 4 to 1 or vice versa]

**Looking now... it may well be that the switch IC proves to be a slow-down... darn - scarce availability!

Looks really promising Tom! A shame about the switch IC’s though😔 This would really work Well within my setup!!

Just when you think the cases are all set from the last two modules...
Will have to make room for this! :yay:

I think this would make my preferred ClockBox row -> Seq/DDiv/DDSR/Logic/SeqSqRnd

Very excited for that. Personally I'd be more into additional switch features, over the clocked random (which could potentially be done with other modules). Or with the random, maybe a 5V offset switch to choose between uni-polar or bi-polar random.

me too probably. maybe a flip flop? (i use the one in UTL6B all the time.) if there's space somehow maybe a reset for the switch?

oh and a question: can this be clocked at audio rates? for combining wave forms maybe?

edit: i guess a flip-flop would possibly be a bit redundant since you could do that with the switch. but maybe more is merrier?

ps: very exciting tom!

Flip-flop - Logic does this at the top ;)
(divide by two & invert)
I don't feel that a reset is entirely necessary with so few steps.

ah yes, about the flip flop. redundant for sure!

also, great point about reset. :tu:

what about audio rate switching?

It can be clocked at audio rates, sure.
I just tried it with 3 vcos patched in then clocked at audio - gnarly results for sure.
You could also patch in fixed voltages & clock at audio rates for a stepped waveform gen, I'd imagine.
