2022-09-18: VoIS Modular in stock

For details, please visit vocoder.hoerold.com. You can choose between a fully assembled module and a DIY kit. There's a promotion that is valid until end of November 2022.

User's Manual (PDF)
Assembly Guide (PDF, only required if DIY kit is ordered)

2021-10-21: Original post (modified)

After the successful release of the DIY standalone 18-channel stereo vocoder (see here), I am excited to announce the VoIS Modular: a 15-channel vocoder in Eurorack format, including a fixed-filter bank. Below are a couple of demo videos.

Here's the set of features:
  • 15 adjustable 8-pole filters with LED clipping indicators
  • Slew control to create unique slurring effects
  • Silence bridging to fill audible gaps with the filtered excitation signal
  • Squelch to gate background noise
  • Spectral shift to shift the analysis filter frequencies up or down
  • Spectral tilt to manipulate the overall frequency spectrum
  • Voiced/Unvoiced Detector to automatically detect voiced and unvoiced signals
  • Freeze Switch to bring the vocoded signal to a standstill
  • Noise Type Switch to select either pink or white noise for the excitation of unvoiced signals
  • BP/LP Switch to select between band-pass or low-pass response of the 100 Hz channel
  • Fixed-filter bank adjustable via the 15 channel filters
The module width is 22 HP.

For more more details, please visit https://vocoder.hoerold.com.

Sounds awesome.
It would be amazing to have CV control of pitch shift and spectral tilt.
Quite sure it's way too late to squeeze that in, but maybe for version 2.

for clarification: do all options (including pcb only) include the prepopulation of all smd parts?

Yes, this is a PCB with all SMD parts preassembled. They are really called PCBA. This PCBA is the same for all four options. Here's the frontside. And here's the backside. If you order the kit, you will have to solder in the through-hole parts: pots, switches, sockets, LEDs, etc.

BTW, I expect the soldering and assembly to take somewhere between 1 to 3 hours, depending on one's experience.

Things are progressing very quickly. I now have six interested parties. For those who are on the fence, keep in mind that I will stop accepting orders once the sign-up list is full. I want to put my full attention on a smooth ramp of this modular.

could there potentially be an expander in the future to give cv control over tilt, shift and the 15 filter banks?

The current version is not prepared for expansion. I have thought about that but this would have driven the price higher because of the required components. It requires AD and DA converters for each CV and corresponding opamps for level shifting. In the first incarnation I was looking for a solution that I feel is in a sweet spot of versatility in relation to cost. If I had added expandability from the get-go, those who don’t want to buy an expansion board for CV control would pay extra for the readiness aspect you are asking for.

My opinion about this idea is that its better in paper than in real life. Switching between presets of all those parameters might have some musical real life application, but single band cv don't make that much difference to the overall sound.

Ps. Nice project, good form factor too!

No, not yet. I am planning to order one soon but it'll take roughly 2 weeks before I can post a picture.

How is this different from the 18-channel diy kit? Is it digital? Its definitely a lot smaller...lol. I might be interested in getting on the waiting list since I love the 18 channel so much.

I'm glad you like the DIY rack mount vocoder. Yes, the VoIS Modular uses 16 bit ADCs and DACs. Otherwise it wouldn't have been possible to fit it in Eurorack format with just 22 HP.

Great stuff, if you could post approximate power usage(needs 5v?) would be great. Keep up the good work

Will do. The plan is to add this to the technical specifications, once I add this chapter to the user's manual that I made available just yesterday.

In case you are wondering why I haven't posted in a while: getting the required components takes longer than anticipated. Like many others, I am affected by the general component shortage experienced by the market. Unfortunately I won't be able to deliver the first 10 vocoders before the winter break as initially targeted. Based on today's estimate by the distributor, it takes at least until end of December to get the missing component. I am sorry for the delay.

Here's what the black panel looks like. You can also see the replaced text for WRP1 and WRP2 which are now called Spectral Shift and Spectral Tilt.
