Dinsync RE-808

Post by Altitude909 »

So right on time for 8/08 day

1:1 replica of the TR-808. The only modern parts are the start/stop switches and of course the Pixie which runs the emulator for the OS, everything else is exactly like the original 808 down to the weird ass 70s phone jacks

Its pretty eye opening. I've built a lot of 808 clones over the years and while getting the instruments right is pretty trivial, getting the whole feel of a real 808 was always something they never could get right and this is a about as close as it comes to the real 808 so all that groove is there. Just like the 303 but in the case of 808, its not a case of 3 parts really defining the sound since all the parts used in 808 are either still in production or easily attainable

I'm kind of pretty hyped for this even though I don't really know if I like the sound of the 808 and barely ever use drum machines in my music.

I also ordered an RE-909 bundle yesterday. And two RE-303 bundles.

Already have System80's 880 with the matching enclosure and am pretty happy with it, though I find the sequencer pretty fucking strange and non-intuitive to work with. Going to assume the workflow is intended to make live usage work more smoothly. I've never tried a real 808 so NFI how similar they are, if at all. Going to pass on the RE-808 but it's an incredible effort to do a replica of this fidelity, I'm mega impressed.
Zap him again! ZAP THE SONOFABITCH AGAIN!

Gonna be building a couple of these, can’t wait. No idea where I can fit one in my studio, but that’s a future problem.

The clap is hard to nail in all the clones and likely this one too but maybe it will incorporate the mod as suggested in the service notes. Bonkers project - really want to dive on board!

The case needs to be ordered seperately. From Kumptronics i believe.

Yeah true, from the Matrixsynth post:

Please note, cases and side panels will be available from our partners at Kumptronics."

I built my Yocto in 2016 and remember the clap was not even close. Then someone on the Elicktronik forum posted something from the service manual about removing a resistor and adding a cap in series. Are we talking about the same thing? I remember spending an unholy amount of time tweaking, but eventually I got my Yocto clap sounding immense.

kinda related. The orginal yocto was laid out according the Roland schematic which had all sorts of mistakes, he never made any of the changes outlined in the service bulletin and the noise thing was one of those things that Roland fixed. No noise issue with this.

May not be the right forum for this, but if any one is building extras I’m looking to buy. If not, I’ll look at getting into a future run and find a builder.

Currently have a TR-808 on loan from friend....and looking to get an RE-808 kit.
But wondering about 2 specific things:

1. Will it run as a Slave to a Sync Clock Input (coming from a Roland sync box SBX-10)
2. Do the 3 Trigger Outputs work exactly like the original? (same spec of trigger pulses /etc?)

I assume answers to both of these are yes, since it is a 1-to-1 clone, but never got confirmation from DinSync.
On the list for a case, I guess now have to wait until kits are back in stock to purchase.
