Module for taming/mangling Batumi

Post by DDJ »

I'm wanting for the best module to take the outputs of Batumi and combine/offset/attenuvert the waveshapes. Samara 2 looks cool but it only does offset for two channels. Tiptop MISO is cool because it crossfades.

Looking for the most function in the smallest hp.

My case lacks complex modulation so waveshape mangling is the most important part. Or do I just get a Zadar and a MISO (for Batumi) and be done with it.

I use a MI Blinds for that. Great module, you can never have enough VCAs.

If you just want to mainly just attenuvert and crossfade/mix waveforms, then the Lapsus Os from NE might come in handy. I don't have one yet, but I like sliders:

Also, Planar2 could be a fun option, a bit bigger and more expensive, but so fully featured you should at least check it out. Intellijel has a lot of good youtube demos of it.

I have both the MIAx3 and Blinds but they get used up really quickly. Looking to add another module to dedicate to the Batumi.

I'm pretty fond of pairing Batumi with the Noise Engineering Lapsus Os.

Blinds is great with Batumi. And Drezno makes for a nice mangler. I don’t have one but I imagine Kinks would be useful, too.

<self promotion> if you want something that does a bit more than just attenuvert and offset (although it can do that too) check out my module Ana, it has 4 inputs and 6 different ways of combining the inputs together using analog logic functions. </self promotion>

MIA seems tough to beat for the size

I'm also wanting the A-138m for this. Not low hp, but it does all of the above and in multiple variations for related modulations

uMod is a lot of fun with any two bipolar CV sources (although it's out of production)

Don't forget XAOC's own Samara. Version two, out now/soon(?) has a few funky features that make it more than an attenuverting mixer.
Is it finished?

Though there's no controls on the device I use a Worng Vector Space to mash three different signals together for a host of resulting CV outputs... though I generally use two or three different LFOs instead of the Batumi outputs. I use the Butami in phased mode mostly.

A-138m - relatively cheap, readily available, nicely wiggle-able and does offset using top row of pots. Add a quad VCA and you have modulation central. It is a great addition to Batumi.

WMD/SSF is a great one, lives next to my Batumi. Blinds is also wonderful for any modulation combinations. I keep Kinks and Toolbox nearby both of those as well and Batumi goes through both of those often.

+1 on ANA. Also Erica Synths Black CV Tools offers a lot of functionality, although takes a bit more HP

Basic stuff, but I have a half wave rectifier and an attenuator sitting next to Batumi.

On the compact side, I’ve used the 4hp ALM O/A/x2 with Batumi for years.

I also keep the clever 8hp Klavis Mixwitch next to Batumi.

Damn, guys. Lots of suggestions in here. Im going to have to head over to modulargrid when I have a few hours to spare.

I notice that no one recommended Zadar or other complex modulation sources. My guess is because even those modules would require the same kind of attenuation/offset/cross fading...

You know? I glossed over that last sentence in your original post. Zadar has attenuation right on the module. If you need to CV an envelope, you can use one of the assignable inputs for that purpose.

The more I look at Tiptop's MISO, the more interesting it gets, especially because of the CV crossfade.

Otherwise, my first instinct these days is to say, "Go with your gut."

Zadar generates signals, it doesn’t modify existing ones. I think Zadar is brilliant. You have less need for attenuators for Zadar because it has a built in attenuator (with optional voltage control), but offset can still be needed sometimes. But Zadar serves other purposes than Batumi. The current epicenter of my modulation world:

frames in wavetable VCA mode. i don't think the outputs are a cascaded mixer like veils/blinds, but there is a mix output. but you're getting modulated modulation that can be modulated on 4 channels.

I always forget that the channels still act as VCAs for other signals in wavetable mode. I need to play with that some more--I usually just use it at audio rate fro drones.

Man, there are a lot of suggestions in here and, after youtube/modulargrid/muffwiggler-ing, I am feeling a little closer to making a decision. I'm still torn between a few though but know it's going to come down to pulling the trigger and see how it augments my controllability. Some options like the Mixwitch are really flexable and have me thinking outside the box. I like that.

Either way I think I'm going to add a Zadar. It's so far from the type of modulation sources that I've used over the past many years and I think I owe it to myself to see how it changes my approach.

Anyways, thanks for your input everyone. I think this will be a useful thread for when people search for modules to pair with Batumi. (when the search function works again...)
