We Demand a DIY Parts Trade Section

Post by roglok » Tue Jun 04, 2013 4:48 am

Considering that the DIYers on Muff's like to help each other out wherever they can, I would like to suggest a trade forum specifically for DIY parts. The 'normal' B/S/T section on Muff's is extremely active, but it's mostly ready-made gear rather than ICs, Knobs, PCBs, tools etc. The idea is not to granularise the forum to death - it just feels a bit off-key to post a request for a rare transistor or vintage slide pots in a forum that's 99% about selling finished products.

I think a dedicated DIY Trades section would be rather lively and lots of fun - it would also prevent requests/offers ending up on page #3 after one day...

Thoughts, Opinions, Actions...?

Sounds like a solid plan to me.
Would be a good resource, and better if it was self contained as you say.

I think this is a great idea, as I've probably got a lot of stuff to sell - I tried using BST but, like you say, the post was buried after about ten minutes!

I likey. The same thought has occurred to me many times, when I suspect an offering would fall through the cracks of modules and other gear. And I do often try to search to find parts, specifically.

Yes this has been done, it didn't get used for several months so was unstickied and floated away. Maybe it will work better this time as there are so many more DIYers around?

Maybe a stickied thread could be tried again, but not a whole dedicated forum

This is a great idea. Also BOMs for parts from Mouser, Newark etc would be a timesaver...

Oh wait, this is just a conversation about a sticky or subforum? I'm all for a trade sticky. :tu:

I like the group buy idea. It could also serve as a "where is the best/safest source for part x right now" thread.

I guess this was before my time. It seems like the DIY section is currently one of the most active forums on Muff's and I would be very surprised to see no love for such a place...

However, a stickied tread is probably not the best idea. You need to be able to see all the different trades at a glance and also close finished transactions. A single thread would be totally chaotic. Depending on the technical possibilities phpBB offers, I vote for a sub-forum to the B/S/T section, which is linked to from the DIY forum (like on electro-music.com)...?

Change the title of your first post to "DIY Parts Trade Thread" and then we all start using it. From what I've seen, the mods take a "put up or shut up" approach to these things, so let's roll!

That would kinda defeat my reasoning (a simple thread being the wrong format for trading). But maybe you are right and we should start with a thread to prove that:

A) there is a necessity for DIY parts trading
B) a simple thread is the wrong format for such a thing

But I'll just open a new thread for that... :hyper:
