You can't tell me what to do. :p I'm going to PaulStretch a Harry Styles track to 6 hours, put this through the most shimmery shimmer patch I can think of, *then* run that through Clouds. And, after that, run it through a Metasonix Butt Probe. I'll then post the "Harry Styles Stretched Butt Probe Cloud CHALLENGE!" and dare influencers to record their reactions to listening to THE ENTIRE THING.

Criticizing others' music always makes me feel sad, for some reason. Especially when it's about reverb / compression. Just let me wallow in my poor tastes ffs.

I know I use too much reverb. I don't care. I like reverb in an unhealthy way.

when you're a baby, you call out "mommy, I made a poo poo! come look!" and if she's a good and loving parent, she'll praise you and say it's beautiful! this is important. we need to feel seen, loved and protected when we are little.

then we grow up and we still expect, nay, demand, that people praise our shit, or be commanded to remain silent(!). criticism is hate speech. and if we don't follow what's proscribed, we're subjected to sour frowns. OMG!!! but in order to grow, we need to work with our shit. maybe mix it with plaster and sculpt it or rub some all over our face and claim we just made a mask.

even though everything is relative and every effort is valid and we create our own reality completely out of our own solipsistic, self involved minds...well don't step off something high and expect that you're gonna fly. but you can try if you want. it's your life.

we should try and be kind and understanding of each other. but then again, sometimes not. your folks aren't going to helicopter in after soccer practice any more. school's out.

perhaps mass culture, through the process of the internet, has vacuumed up everything and claimed it as its own. it's good to note the possibility, but who cares? each of us are individuals and have always had to walk our own path. we're in an era where the herd is full of confidence and high self regard. it used to be about golf, it's now about noise music.

don't worry about the pinched, timid, sour faces. they're helpless and harmless. you might pull the same kind of face sometime in the future. do what you will. don't be afraid to speak your mind. try to be nice, if you'd like. or say what you mean, and say it mean. speak your mind regardless. express yourself in any way you want. frowns are utterly harmless. inducing them can be entertaining.

if this doesn't make sense to you, that's okay.

On the other hand, see Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. Used sparingly, shimmer can be lovely.

Now, I'm off to hook my cat's litterbox up to an envelope follower.

You take words out of my mouth, I didn´t even know they were inside there. But, yes, makes sense to me.

As natural born outsider, you first suffer from it some time, then you become proud about it, then you loathe all well funded shiny happy "inside" people telling they are deep artists too, just "follow me on youtube", and while they are just singing lala they are singing it loud enough to drown out any poetry you might have put into your song, in a world that is about loudness. And THEN there is the possibility that you yourself are just a self aggravated asshole, from a different POV you can´t even rule out, possibly both perspectives being "true".

Just keep doing your thing, it all doen´t matter that much.

Ps: this is not the worst thread, it is about SOMETHING, nothing worse than pages of "count me in for two" when you search for some circuit details...

I was just about to post my long, ambient modular synth youtube video, for the community to get lost in

it sounds like a long, modulated FART

I call it "Air on a G-string"

but now I'm keeping it to myself, to savor and enjoy

I say "rap" quite a bit, but I mean just to chat. Im usually pretty good about not writing how I speak.

But this may be a foretelling of the 2023 wave of emo-rap topics when all DJs have been replaced by algorithms.

If you relate to the whole "I'm a true real artist making emotional real true deep art surrounded by narcissistic plastic conformist wannabes who only care about likes and attention" shtick, you might be 14, or operating on that level. Just make music and worry less about how unique and special you are. That's something the clouds into rings ambient crowd understands more than most.

Everyone's convinced they're the ones making the meaningful art. If you're into any creative endeavor, focus on that and let critics waste time caring about how important it is.

By pungent you mean, of course, having a warm, moving effect on the body, stimulating the appetite, improving nutrient absorption.

Im thinking nutmeg, maybe he means kimchi.

I think the style of "modular self-generating ambient" OP refers to is a necessary stepping stone in the learning process for a lot of people. Some people linger there a bit longer, or make a career out of it. A certain amount of antagonism between members of a musical scene for the purposes of prompting others to snap out of it and go explore other sonic territory is healthy. Art is meant to be a dangerous moving frontier that challenges itself, not some stationary haven of civility and immunity.

I was thinking of this too. Unlike many other instruments, when you are learning modular, you can make something that "sounds like something" and post it online at a level of audio (and/or video) quality unthinkable some time ago. I listen to a lot of minimal stuff (also maximal stuff) and the minimal work is technically easy to produce, and yet there is a world of difference between what I hear coming from the labels I love and much of what I hear when people are demoing things on YouTube or letting a generative process run. Whatever satisfies....

That is simply your own opinion. By it's very nature, art is whatever the artist wants it to be.
