Spare Grilles?

Post by BugBrand » Tue May 04, 2021 9:01 am

Jas (my assistant) is looking for a Grilles..
For now she can use my one as I'm barely utilising it (or anything, really) but if anyone has one looking for a new home, do let me know please!
(I think Robert confirmed he'd stopped making in general?)

For what its worth, I’d commit to buying a Grilles if more were to be made. I might even speak with money! :D

Indeed.

It is difficult to make a new batch with a very few interests (2, 3 etc). Even if I'd start making a new batch of 10, it would not be rentable for me. Not only because of the amount of work to build them and other private reasons that make it difficult, but mostly because I have to give at least 50% of the sale price to the french tax system, which does not encourage to be active and independant.
In the lat 3 years I earned 0 EUR because of these taxes. I'd need to sell volumes of 30, better 50 units to get a revenue out of the activity.

EDIT: changing my text about Github and making a new updated post.

I first didn't find my repositories on Github, but all is ok now. I can't find the Orgone MK2, so I'll add again as soon as I can.

Here you can find all files (schematics, pcb, panel) necessary to make a module.
https://github.com/scrotumLab

Talking about the files (schematics, pcb, panel), if I was to make any module from these files, I would first modify the circuits of some of them and also optimize the PCBs...

For Grilles for instance, I would ideally modify the circuit, make new schematics and PCB layout, so the GATE OUTS are totally conform to the BugBrand standard of +10V. I would use for instance a couple of opAmps to multiplying by 2 all signals at the outputs of the shift register (74HC595D).

Cheers Robert,
Yeah, I absolutely agree that micro scale production is pretty darn tough (even without such a tax regime - that's nuts!!)

That's super to have the githubs up - perhaps Jas will take the DIY route with the files up.

Tom, if Jas does go down that route maybe she could make some extras to cover her costs? I'd take one as I never got around to getting one from Robert at the time.

I'm more than happy if I can give back to the community here by giving the files needed. And if any profit involved, you can donate to a good cause.
If Jas or anyone else wants to make them identically to my last batch of Grilles, I can post here GERBER files directly.
I can even give you the pick'n'place file if you want to go a step further.
Pers. I'd revise a bit the circuit, but it's also fun like it is now. I did it primarly to use with the Radio Music and they patch very well together and I didn't know anyway really how to push the signals up back then.
I can check if needed if I still have some spare panels that I didn't use because of scratches/marks and see if any if worth it.
I can also post the firmware as .hex file of the alternative fimware from TheSlowGrowth integrating clock divisions mode. It's the one I added to the last batch of Grilles. Works fine and is IMHO very useful.

[I tweaked David's reply to Jas(mine) rather than Jay ;)]
Yeah, I'll have a chat with her about it when in next week.
Maybe I'll have a look over the original mutable schematics to see about the gate outputs but I don't think there's any real worry having them at +5V.

I didn't find back then, but maybe a shift register chip accepting +10V and outputing +10V signals does exist.
I'd also check today the inputs and their LM1117-5.0 (+5V) and LM4040 5.0V (-5V), but as you say, maybe it's just unnecessarily complicating where not needed.

Thanks Tom for correcting my typo and for following up on the idea.

Sorry to hear you've stopped producing Bug modules batchas. Hope you get back to it one day!

After having a lot of issues with Github (error 404, „Commit failed“ etc) I had to replace files, but I was finally able to add also these files to the updated Grilles repository:
GERBER files for frontpanel and PCB.
BOM with all references for DIY.
