Do you intend to design an enclosure and bits to build up a whole unit? Or will this be aimed more for repair/restoration of existing units (which tend to sell for like $3000 or more )?

I second that emotion. A standalone sequencer box with just midi, trigger, and accent outputs would be ideal to work with arbitrary drum modules.

If you need a good "drum machine without sounds", build yourself a MIDIBox.

I put 4 MIDI outs on mine, plus 8 triggers (you can have up to 64), as well as 8 voices of CV/Gate.

You'll have yourself a fabulous drum programmer using just one of the 16 tracks. It's very much like the TR-606 programmer in that you can write/edit/save patterns while the thing runs. Up to 256 steps in a track. Loads of "shuffle" options, even custom shuffle templates.

Then you can program more drums, basses, 303s, chord stabs, etc on the other tracks :-)
