No 1U row...? No problem!

Post by XODES » Sat Sep 04, 2021 3:01 pm

No need to buy a new rack just to include a limited number of 1U modules... and no need to tilt your head either!

These should be available in the coming weeks, in various widths, with M2.5 and M3.0 rail options.

Each frame eats 2HP. Works with 1U modules in Intellijel format only.

Prices will be in the 20 to 30-ish Euro range, depending on width.

Perfect! Just maybe add 1-in-3 ribbon cables with these, so people don't run out of power headers.
I guess I'll want one (or several?) of these.

Thanks!
Some people may indeed need a way to get more power headers, some people may not need it...
I guess making these available as a separate product would make more sense then.

Pretty cool. I remember some people saying you couldn’t fit 3 intellijel format 1U modules in 3u but apparently you can.

Well... you indeed can! :)

It's the Pulp Logic format for which you could only fit 2.

Even though the Intellijel format looks more popular these days, I'm evaluating solutions so that users may still have the choice.

Modules within modules - I love it! This looks like the solution I've been looking for to try out some 1U modules in my 2x Mantis case. I actually like that it gives a 1hp "border" on each side because I use 1hp or 2hp blanks to separate most modules these days anyway. Very nice!

Some may like an aluminum version better, so, this was made to see how it would look like.

The black ones will ship first, and the future of the aluminum ones will depend on demand / volume and the impact on the price.

Where from? Any uk suppliers?

I have several NLC 1us that I haven’t built, entirely because I’ve got nowhere to put them.

I prefer aluminum panels so the aluminum version would be my pick but I understand it comes down to demand and cost. Looking good, though! Is that "BOB" panel a planned 1U module from yourself?

Very cool. So are these being sold with variable widths of rails?

There should be at least 2 of my dealers interested in those, with one being in the UK. For non-UK residents, these will also be available directly from my webshop!
I'll have 10HP and 14HP available, as well as a very limited amount of 6HP and 12HP to start with.

The rails are indeed part of the product, and are adapted to the width of the frame.

It should actually read BD8 :)
There have been a couple prototypes assembled for the real module since late 2017 actually, creating all of the TR-808 instruments in individual 1U 6HP modules. This was pre-XODES (which then was XO labs), and I had to archive all associated media so that people stop asking for the 1U drums availability.
It's been difficult to plan a release for so many modules at once since I started XODES, so these placeholders were made for who might be interested in this project.

Any plan for sizes above 14 HP? For instance Endorphin.es just released a few 1U modules in the 20+ HP range, and I think a couple intellijel modules are large as well. If you don't want to start stocking every possible size, I totally understand.

The 10HP and 14HP formats were decided after analyzing what's on the market. The fact there are rails within the adapters make it possible to combine modules in the same row.

So, depending on how things go with these, this may only be the beginning and the family should indeed grow. It wouldn't make much sense to make an infinite number of widths available though, so I'd say 20HP and 24HP models would seem to be good candidates for the next versions, and the rest might depend on demand and what comes out. The price would increase accordingly, yet this might still be a viable option for who already invested big money in cases.

If 3U versions of the wider 1U modules are available and you do the math, you may gain some HP with sticking to 3U though...

One could indeed dedicate a small case to 1U only format with these...! :)
Until someone comes with a solution that works with the Intellijel format, just like Syinsi did for the Pulp Logic one.

Will there be any that could accommodate longer 1U intellijel modules, such as the Steppy 1U or multi effects 1U modules? Thanks!

These should start shipping in small batches in the next 2 weeks. There will be an update on social media / mailing list / this topic whenever it happens!

I've wondered when someone would do something like this. Looks nice. TBH, I've half expected to see some people making entire 1u systems/mini cases.

Would be nice to eventually see 19" 1u racks, or 4u Happy Ending style racks to accomodate a 1u row. I've had the desire to create something like that for a while. If only I had the first clue about manufacturing/outsourcing to specialists...

Thanks. A little sad to know all my original ideas aren't so original though, haha.
