Toppobrillo Sport Modulator 2- discussion and signup

Post by inner_light » Wed Mar 03, 2021 11:33 am

Hello!
Over on the FB group "the Wigglers" there has been some discussion with Joshua (Toppobrillo) at the possibility of another run of the Sport Modulator. He flagged 100 orders as making it worth his while, so this is a post to assess interest.
There he has listed several improvements for its successor.

He said:
"ok. while we're taking this seriously, let's consider what could (easily) be done to improve it. I've had designs on a sort-of 're imagining' of a functional successor but in the interest of keeping it short and simple for a small production run, at very least ,any obvious feature improvements/ requests? I've got so far in mind- attenuverting CV input, normalled to the 'end' output potentially, for a 'skew' control when unpatched, *perhaps* a 2nd CV input that is scaled v/oct roughly, buttons that remember their state (or toggle switches), bicolor LEDs, a HOLD LED to make it easier to see what mode you're in.. STRETCH goals- built in random source patch, on a switch, pretty easy to do, will prevent the SM from latching up in that mode too, a sync/reset input (this is to differentiate (no pun intended) the SM from somethin like a DUSG which has a trigger input) also easy, a mix output with an xfade between the top and bottom channel.. thats all i got thus far. I still like the interface simple (if a bit too simple) and compact. "

If you're like me, i've been hunting for a used SM for years! This is very exciting. Anyone have any other simple suggestions for improvement?

Apropos of the thread I started here on "building a Sport Modulator from other modules" I commented on The Wiggler Facebook group a couple days ago wondering if any manufacturer was considering making a similar patch-programmable module, and Joshua actually mentioned that he might be willing to consider making a limited run of Sport Modulator if he could get "100 pre-orders"! I figure if this becomes a Kickstarter project, we can definitely get 100 backers for Sport Modulator 2.0, right? I've never actually been able to get one of the original Sport Modulators (Toppobrillo was before my time in modular), but I hope that some folks who do know the module well can comment on the suggested possible changes and improvements.

Count me in, and update us when we can sign up/pre-order/show interest. He probably has no idea how much the eurorack market has grown since then.

A classic that deserves another run.

It was magic in tandem with Maths and the Brains/PP combo as I recall.

With the mentioned interface reworking I'd definitely be interested - hope there will be a kickstarter to secure it!

The improvements read like my wishlist from 8 years of using the Sport Modulator. I’d definitely buy one if it turns out to be 12 or 14 hp. Glad Joshua is open to projects like this, Toppobrillo has always been my favorite Euro company.

It seems I got into eurorack after this went out of production. Are we talking a diy face-plate and pcb (yes please!) or kit or finalised module?

The diy would be the most interesting to me but also would consider the kit or final module - watching the demos it looks really nice!

There has been no mention of how the finished product would be sold! Watch this space I guess.

For anyone not familiar, I recommend the James Cigler demo video. GREAT video that highlights a few of its many uses

This is exciting!! I've been longing for another sport mod since I sold mine a while back so I'm definitely in for a pre-order!
