Neuzeit Instruments - Orbit - Bitcrusher/Distortion/Filter/Env/VCA

Post by Hutenberger »

Hi Muffers,

here it is, ORBIT!
After one year of development my version of a very special crush/distortion/filter/vca unit became reality.

Full feature walkthrough:

Orbit is a mighty tool for transforming any kind of sound into a totally new sound design. In combination with an oscillator this module forms a complete synth voice.
It is focussed on creating nonlinear distortion and overtones, but in a way that allows you to be always in full control of the sound. It is feature packed and follows a one-pot-per-function approach, while the buttons also allow some deeper modification with a secondary user level.

Main functions:
  • Bitcrusher - with invertible bits, bitrate can follow fundamental frequency of the input signal
  • Harmonizer - with up to 5 super-/sub-oscillators which can track the fundamental frequency of the input signal
  • Multimode OTA Filter - 12dB/Oct LP/HP/BP with seamless Fade between LP/HP
  • Envelope Generator/Follower - with self-triggering LFO function
  • Mixer - with VCAs for DRY and WET
  • Input mixer - with VCAs for IN1 and IN2
  • DC-coupled - Audio and CV ins and outs
  • Future proof - New firmware can be uploaded easily via audio file if ever neccessary

Looks cool. So the bit crush effects are digital but the filter is analog?

Exactly. Bitcrushing means it reads the analog signal with an analog to digital converter, translates the bits by calculation, and then reproduces an analog waveform with a digital to analog converter. From there on the path is again fully analog.
The read cycle timing is the sample rate.

This was earned with blood and sweat, took me about 4 weeks to shoot it. I had practically to start with zero knowledge about video shooting and probably made every mistake possible ;) The next video will be easier i hope.

There is some heavy color-grading involved in the video... ;) I found it really difficult to get the colors visible at all on photos and video.
Anyways don't worry, my comparison for brightness settings was the brightness of Mutable Instruments modules, so i guess it should be fine for most people.

...
Someone else asked me if the settings are stored on power off/on.
The answer is simply YES. There is an external chip on the module (FRAM) which stores the settings.

Really nice module! Any chance for a standalone Harm module?

Best,

How does this compare to the OTO biscuit? Seems like a biscuit in modular form which is more than welcome as those have skyrocketed in price

I also would say that OTO Biscuit is the nearest relative to Orbit. I have unfortunately never had a Biscuit in my own hands, but from what i hear from Biscuit demos, i would say that Orbit might get quite close to many sounds. This regards the distortion by inverting or muting bits + multimode VCF.
Biscuit has some integrated effects that Orbit does not have, but Orbit has features (pitch tracking -> RATE, HARM section, VCAs, dedicated Env, etc) that Biscuit does not have. So i guess the target is quite the same, but the way to go there is different. Feed cheesy sounds, make them fat.
Some main differences might lie in the general concept. Orbit is quite "hands-on" as you have one potentiometer per function and many CV inputs. Biscuit has MIDI control and relies on some deep menu dives. I would say that Biscuit suits the needs for Tabletop-musicians while Orbit clearly targets on Eurorack users.

So I assume the audio input needs to be a square wave in order for the Orbit Osc's to track?
What happens when you input audio program material? like spoken word or a music track?
I'm always on the lookout for a module that mangles audio, not just oscillator square waves.

........... Something like the Rossum Panharmonium which I own and love!

For good pitch tracking, the audio input needs to be a periodic signal, not necessarily a square wave. Orbit measures the time between zero-crossings of the audio input for tracking. If a zero-crossing occurs, Orbit checks the time since the last zero-crossing and determines the tracking frequency out of that instantly. The measured frequency sets the base freq for the Harmonizer section and for the Bitcrusher's rate if it is in sync mode. This means, that ...

... if you insert any standard waveform such as sine, saw, square (basically anything that has one zero-cross per cycle) these kind of signals have a (mathematically) clear base frequency which can easily be tracked by Orbit. Therefore, the Harmonizer adds up to five (squarewave) oscillations which helps you to build some chords on top of your oscillator. The tracking of the Bitcrusher's sampling rate also follows the pitch of the oscillator input in sync mode.
... if you insert any complex oscillator waveform with more than one zero-crossing per cycle (e.g. FM sounds, wavetable sounds, etc), but which is periodic anyways, Orbit will also produce a tracking with the same periodicity. This is soundwise comparable to oscillator hard-sync. Orbit's Harmonizer output will also have more than one zero-crossing per cycle, but the cycle frequency still tracks the cycle frequency of your input signal.
... if you insert something random or noisy which does not have a clear periodicity Orbit will not be able to track any clear base frequency which makes sense to the human ear. Orbit's Harmonizer sounds glitchy then, which might be useful or not depending on what you are trying to achieve. But you can disable the pitch-tracking of Orbit for both Harmonizer and Bitcrusher section, so that you can trim the Harmonizer's frequency manually to a static frequency with the delta-f knob or the Rate knob for the Bitcrusher. E.g. if you feed a drum loop which is usually complex sound you can set the Harmonizer's base frequency to the root note of the kick drum by ear.
