Re: Oberheim is back..

I'll take the little screen over the P-5/P-6/OB-6/P-10 need to communicate everything not on the front panel through a three character, seven-segment display. That annoys me to no end no matter how much I enjoy the sound of those instruments.

Re: Roland AIRA Compact T-8 J-6 E-4

Hand on heart this is the first piece of Roland gear (the T-8) I've wanted in a long, long time. It's not especially groundbreaking, clever, or powerful, but it does look fun to use. And that's what holds the greatest appeal to me these days. That's just it, it's pocket-sized, impulse-purchase pric...

Re: Superbooth 2022 - Discussion / Empty Wallets

I think there’s a pretty big difference between boycotting Behringer and Andrew Huang but maybe I’m not reading enough into it. As far as vain, self involved youtubers go Andrew Huang seems pretty benign to me. He can be a little annoying and annoyingly Canadian but other than that he seems like a ...

Re: Why I Shouldn't Have Bought Eurorack from Thomann

Come to think of it, now I remember that back when I was shopping for the Vermona PerFourmer mkII, I looked at both Thomann and Schneidersladen and decided not to buy from either despite the better prices because of the power supply issue. I ended up buying the PerFourmer from Perfect Circuit so as...

Maybe it was known that they were going to bring a module later, but the Prophet 5 was immediately available wasn't it? Pictures of the module definitely didn't surface until later. Maybe Carsten mentioned they were going to do a module, but he hasn't commented yet about this one in any capacity. I...

Re: Favorite Boss Pedals

No one, least of all me, needs four fuzzes. Sorry that does not compute... fuzz face, tonebender, harmonic percolator, superfuzz, big muff and we're already at 5. Hey, I never said I don't want five fuzzes. But when you're like me and your guitar chops would make The Shaggs wince you realize having...

Re: Favorite Boss Pedals

I recently did a pedal purge; the number had grown to silly proportions. No one, least of all me, needs four fuzzes. I plugged in everything at the same time to go through them back-to-back with a plan on keeping one or at most two of each type of effect. Much of the Boss stuff got the axe, but the ...

Re: Depeche Mode & New Order

When I was in my teens and twenties I was solidly in the DM camp, but still mildly liked NO. Now that I'm in my forties, I rarely listen to DM. But NO is never far from my playlist and I'm often looking up bootlegs of their live performances on YouTube I don't know what to read into that. When I was...

I hate "workflow" as a term; it makes music sound like some horrible protestant work ethic thing.

I want making music to be a pleasure. It should be a joyflow.

Re: Are tube amps in serious trouble?

Last week I was looking to purchase some alternate tubes for the Effectrode Blackbird I bought, and Sweetwater had - out of something like 82 listings for tubes and tube sets - precisely one offering actually in stock. Seems as though there is a ton of panic buying at the moment.

Re: Yamaha's Greatest Contribution

Weirdly I only have one Yamaha instrument at the moment, a BBPH (Peter Hook) bass. Gorgeous build, and super zingy; a real 1980s machine. It's not my absolute favourite bass to play (a $450 Squier gets that honour), but it is so damned well constructed and hugely flexible. peter-hook-signature-bb_fr...

That was my take too after watching some of these videos. Terrible interface, great sound. I'll wait for a Mk.2 version.

Re: Effect pedals for bass

- Becos CompIQ Stella for compression / light overdrive. Really flexible and powerful. I hate two-knob compressors. I need to be able to fuck the sound up. - Zoom MS-70CDR for its chorus and detune algorithms. The Small Stone effect sounds better than my actual EHX Small Stone and is great for when ...

Re: History of modular synthesizers - in the 80s and 90s

I was Bruce Duncan of Modcan's first paying custom in 1997. It was only Modcan A back then and sourcing extra Pomona cables was a royal PITA. I'm gratified at how easy modular is to buy these days.

I seem to recall Technosaurus was a thing back then as well, though my dates may be a bit off.

those faders on the JD-08 are ridiculously short...I mean, the Boutique series are notable for short faders, but they went too far with this ones can you imagine setting a value between 0 and 127 using them? What’s programming the regular unit like? The explorer appeals to me but at the same time I want to be programming it a lot, and so less knobs etc makes me concerned it will be a pain. Re: Sequential Take 5

Good question. It's been 4 months and I'd imagine you'd need more time to design and manufacture a synth. Indeed. It's far more likely this was part of what helped Dave sell the company. "We're also 90% done this high value, low-cost model that will allow us to push into new markets blah blah ...
