Building a VCO1 as designed by Thomas Henry

So, I finally got the parts, after designing the PCB Layout using KiCAD. Thought I would share pictures of the build process. https://imgur.com/a/rmtRyNk PCB is done (i.e. prepared), doesn't look pretty, next time I'll try the toner heat transfer method. I could also try and dye the PCB to get it co...

This is ridiculous. Like selling a tank that decreases in size if you increase the diameter of the hose you want to fill it with... I know it's not a good analogy, and I guess there are usecases where it doesn't matter. Or perhaps where this is even beneficial. I guess I'll try both, film and cerami...

Hm, allright, I was refering to some chart comparing various capacitor types' impedences at increasing frequencies. http://www.iequalscdvdt.com/esr.html I have to admit I didn't read the text, yet. I probably should. You said: For power supply decoupling, where the voltage is steady, it means ...

Ah, so it's their size why you would avoid them, I haven't had my hand on many capacitors so I don't know how big they're gonna be.

In the picture they all look the same to me XD

Huh, as you probably can imagine I didn't see that tiny plus sign.

I'm still curious about what would happen if I used an unpolarized cap there.

I'm building VCO1 by Thomas Henry. I didn't say I need 100 caps for 3 VCO's but buying that set of 500 caps with 10 different values was as expensive as buying 6pcs of 10µF tantal caps. And I didn't want to use tantal. Anyhow, indeed next to those two cap rows I mentioned earlier, it says this shoul...

Hm, I think those 10µF capacitors I need are for, filtering the power supply... at least they are in parallel with 4 more 0.01µF capacitors
one row of 10µ + 4x0.01µ between GND and -12V
and another row between GND and +12V.

I'm no expert, but I think this will be fine using ceramic caps... (?)

I ended up buying an assorted kit of ceramic caps from ebay, because it was as expensive to buy the 10 times 50 pcs kit as would have been to buy the 6 caps in tantal. For some reason I couldn't find non-SMD 10µF ceramic caps for less than at least an arm AND a leg... I could have spared an arm, but...

Hm, I was certain digikey only sells to companies.. perhaps because they wanted to set up some sort of account when we ordered a couple of parts at work.

Well, thanks for enlightening me.

I'll be spending a couple of sleepless nights comparing prices now :D

Huh, I haven't heard of arrow or farnell yet, thanks for the hint. For digikey you need a business account I think? I can get most of my stuff from reichelt, but I couldn't find some ceramic capacitors there and I won't touch tantal. Their pots are mostly carbon film pots though and the conductive p...

Yeah, but I would have to buy material for like 7 VCOs, and I don't know if anyone would buy even the two I wanted to build for selling...

buying stuff from mouser, shipping fees are crazy high

Hi, I want to build 3 VCOs, keep one and sell the rest. I planned to use stripe grid boards. Not sure if people would buy that. The frontpanels will be handpainted. Don't have a design yet. Is it common practice to group-buy stuff off mouser? The components I plan on getting there are 23EUR in total...

Well, I've heard about using linear for CV and log for audio, however I'm not sure I can reliably identify which is which in a schematic, that's why I asked. But it's ok, shipping on mouser is messed up high, so I might as well get 2 full sets, both log and lin and experiment with them to see which ...

log or lin Pots for VCO1?

Sorry, if this comes along as a dumb question, I'm more of a Software guy myself, but I wanted to build a VCO according to Mr. Henry's schematics (VCO1). I'm wondering if I should use linear potentiometers for R37 LINEAR FM (because it's called Linear FM  ), R35 COARSE, R36 FINE and R39 IN...
