Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Oh whoops! I have plenty of BC547, but not 2N3904, however I think they should be fine (but orientation matching the silkscreen) but happy to be corrected! Do you have a rough estimate when you might do a new firmware? BC547 is NPN, you need a PNP to replace the 2N3906. BC557 will probably work, pi...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Would you recommend those of us who have already built it to try to swap those transistors? Only if you find the display isn't bright enough! Desoldering stuff isn't very fun, I try to avoid it unless necessary. Also, the display module is plastic and will melt if you get the soldering iron close t...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Just a quick update to let people following know about 2 things: 1. I tested the memory chip alternate today (Winbond W25Q40CLSNIG) and it works perfectly. It has the correct narrow SOIC footprint and stores 99 patches without a problem (it could store 128 I believe). The original W25Q80DV could tec...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

More likely you have a soldering or part orientation issue. If your can post some clear photos of each board (both sides) here on the forum, I'd be happy to inspect and see if I can spot anything amiss. Thanks extralifedisco, can't wait to get it up and running! (The three transistors next to the d...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Hi folks, super beginner here - sorry in advance for the basic questions incoming. Just finished building this guy and once connected to power nothing happens. I've double checked all my soldering, gone through with the multimeter on continuity and everything is apparently looking good. Not sure ho...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

I ordered a built Super Sixteen this weekend as I don't think I have the skills for this build yet, but this was a thought that occurred to me when looking at the capabilities... how hard would it be to support additional triggers out from the Super Sixteen? I could imagine a 2hp expansion with 4x ...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Not worth the risk if you have already soldered them in, but ideally sockets should of been used. Did it work is the main question though ;-) Texy Thanks. I've left them in place. Currently working on building the control board and installed the sockets on it. The next problem I've encountered is t...

Re: Super Sixteen firmware update 1.1 - installation support thread

I've just completed my super 16 build and done a very basic test. This is with the supplied v1.1 code, not the latest v1.1a code. I had already programmed another spare 328p chip from my spares box and fitted it to the s16. It does run, but it runs very slowly - I think perhaps it is because the fl...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Hi im just wondering if there are any plans to do another run? Id love a full DIY of this one! Looks so fun and intuitive. I'm in the middle of restocking boards and kits right now, but DIY kits are available at synthCube and should be back in stock at Thonk soon. Complete modules are also availabl...

Re: Super Sixteen firmware update 1.1 - installation support thread

How difficult would it be to modify the firmware to optionally output the glide trigs via the clock out? This is such a solid acid line sequencer really want to use an additional gate for accents etc Not necessarily a feature request I'm happy to have a go at modifying the code and recompiling my o...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

I'm 80% of the way through the build, still waiting for some switches. Seems the 7-seg display is a little too tight to go through the square hole for it. I'll have to get the scalpel out.... Texy Square hole? I hope you don't mean the panel cutout - it's meant to sit behind the panel! Though I don...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Hi Matthew, I've not quite got all the parts yet, but I've started the first PCB build. Seems I forgot to order the 1uF capacitor with the rest of the majority of the parts from Farnell. I'll have a few 1uF caps in my spares box somewhere - I assume the 160v rating isn't too critical - anything ove...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Annoyed with myself ! I ordered two lines of 2N2904's instead of ordering some 2N2906's. So I've ordered some from eBay. I also got my pcb + panel & Atmel chip from Thonk today, forgetting that it also included the grey tact switch button caps. Of course they need to go with square switch shafts, n...

Re: Super Sixteen firmware update 1.1 - installation support thread

Hi, i received my pcb + panel set today from Thonk with pre-programmed 328P with a label saying it has 1.1 firmware. I assume this is not the same as 1.1a ? I've already pre-programmed a spare 328P with 1.1a in readiness anyway. Once I have all the parts to build the super sixteen I'll initially tr...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Hi, well I've had some 'fun' sourcing the parts for this build, mainly because I want to be able to purchase everything within the UK. I've struggled with the tactile switch caps, so decided to go for switches with a longer button shaft : switch.jpg The shaft is 9.4mm high - hopefully this is long ...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Difficult to find the difference between W25Q80DVSNIG and 25Q80BVSIG, but the BV parts are freely available here in the UK, and it does meet your 4kb sector erase requirement, although I realise there is a lot more to it than that !¬ – W25Q80BV: 8M-bit/1M-byte (1,048,576) – 256-byte per programmabl...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Hi, this could be my first "build my own partial kit", and the octopart BOM spreadsheet sure is a useful start, but...and bear with me as I am new to this, why are some of the parts not listed, or more specifically. those 17 amber LED's - what's so special about them that neither digikey, mouser, o...

Re: Super Sixteen - Success at last (bad 4822)!

Hi Matthew, I received a new MCP4822 today, replaced the old one and things are looking great! Now for learning the Super16 and making music. Thanks for the design and support, Izhar Wow, great news! Such an usual error to find a half-working piece of silicon like that. I guess it happens once in a...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Thanks for providing an inverted LED firmware, Extralife. I took a look at the schematics, but I wanted to properly correct it. Got a desoldering gun (finally!) and had it fixed right away. I've even got the new firmware flashed. Now to spend the next week learning how to use it! Excellent, glad to...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Hi everyone, Maybe it's a coincidence, but since I upgraded my firmware to the latest version my Super Sixteen will randomly (every 15 minutes maybe?) switch back to program 1. It never stops playing, so it doesn't seem like a full reset of the unit, but it just chains into program 1 instead of rep...

Re: Super Sixteen firmware update 1.1 - installation support thread

Hi Matthew! I just tried to update my DIY build to 1.1a using an arduino uno but I don't have access to the new features. I didn't run into any issues during the upgrade and the output of avrdude looked good (writing, reading and verification successful). Here's what I did: 1. Uploaded the ArduinoI...

Super Sixteen firmware update 1.1 - installation support thread

I'm pleased to announce the availability of firmware version 1.1a for the Super Sixteen eurorack module, introducing new generative sequencing mutation modes, sequence chaining, and note name display mode. The firmware update .hex file is available on my github page as a release: https://github.com/...

Re: Reinstall firmware?

just reading the above reply to izash... I'm all tooled up with a USB AVR Programmer and the Arduino IDE. But I'm confused as to what way round the connector goes on the board. I've not used one of these before, but it looks like the red stripe on the cable is connected to VCC (although it could ju...

Re: Reinstall firmware?

Hi Matthew, Do you think I should re-install the firmware? If so, what is the procedure? Thanks, Izhar Hi Izhar, I think that's unlikely to fix the issue. Bad EEPROM data would only affect the calibration data and thus the pitch output scaling, but bad flash/nvram data would likely cause a fatal er...

Re: Super Sixteen build support thread

Hi Matthew, I checked everything as far as I can, and the connections seem fine. The 4822 outputs CV on pin 6 which goes all the way to the CV output on the front panel. There’s no pitch CV output on pin 8. Could it be a bad chip? Any suggestion? Thanks Izhar He Izhar, Sorry for the delay, just cau...
