Re: Drone in the (bandcamp) news

Thanks for sharing, that's not a bad writeup! I got my ass reamed out in my thesis defense by one of Pauline's students. A brush with fame! Sonic Meditations is incredibly important to my relationship with drone. This summer I'm taking a few of my visual arts students to a residency where I'll prog...

Re: Is Modular Synthesis More Difficult Than you Expected It to Be?

"Difficult" requires context, I think. Difficult to make music with? That depends on what kind of music you're trying to make. I don't make music, so I've found it very easy to wade into. What one might find difficult in a musical context is a pretty joyful experience for me.

Re: Your biggest Aha! moment...

I consider any day without an ahha to be a bit disappointing. After 50 years working with modular systems, I've collected quite a few. Here are some highlights: [*] I discovered that if you patch a stage trigger out on the Moog 960 sequencer to another stage select, both stages would light and the ...

Your biggest Aha! moment...

When were you MOST surprised, or excited to discover something? Maybe a threat to compliment the excellent "my small discovery" one. At this point in my modular journey, it was definitely the moment when I realized I could cram pitched signals into the sync input on a VCO and synth-e-size the source...

Re: Today my small discovery was...

A few days ago I learned that the DWS by York Modular can produce a far greater number of timbres than I thought I could get out of a wavefolder. There are pots that let you affect 8 different diode stages. It's a deep dive and requires a lot of experimentation, especially with sound sources and inp...

Makes sense, though I wish the trimmer were more easily accessed, like on the PP. I find that I have to adjust that one periodically. Thanks to both of you for chiming in!

I was going to say Radar. :)

Number one in my book is the Rampage. It's a pleasure to use in terms of ergonomics, and has a lot of tricks up its sleeve. I find I use it for all sorts of unexpected things.

0ctrl snapping to step one

Many apologies if this is a known issue, but after looking around a bit I couldn't seem to find anything. Upon occasion when playing the 0ctrl like a keyboard, a touch to a "key" will instead snap itself back to step one instead of the key being touched. Either that or it flashes on step one briefly...

Re: Moog ladder filter is overrated

It doesn't seem insane to me to suggest a piece of gear is overrated. People new to things like modular or studio engineering or whatever will often convince themselves that certain equipment sounds best to them.simply because it is supposed to. Moog is an obvious foil to that. Critical listening ta...

Re: Behringer Neutron eurorack integration (Power supply Q)

I measured my Neutron with a bench power supply and it draws 530-540mA at 12V. Pretty independent of volume, so it make a good load in case you have a switching mode power supply for your rack Out of curiosity, did you measure it with every section fired up and functioning? I've seen some other mea...

Mazzatron 19" adapter

Mazzatron seems to fly way under the radar, but they're a really great low cost source for eurorack stuff. I recently ordered a batch of these 19" brackets = rails and am pretty happy with them. I'm not sure the price is stabilized yet as they're making them to order, but it seems like it's around $...

Re: Best Drone VCO

In the euro realm, I always reach for a stack of Bermudas from Noise Reap. I have five of them now, but nine soo The Bermuda is great--not just on price. For the most part get a lot of VCOs, so NoiseReap made that easy. The Humble FM is endless, but digital FM, of course. No personal experience, bu...

Re: Big system advice

I think the best solution is to get a single case big enough for all the modules. A pair of bus modules is really good for cleaning up the mess. You will also get better noise floor with a single case with a single well designed power supply and power distribution system. These are unbalanced patch...

Re: Where to go from here?

This is a common refrain, but it would help a lot to know what you like to make. Pretty much any module can be complimented by any other module, so the possibilities are a little extreme without context. I guess you have a valid point there. ;) I'm working on, let's say, tonal progressive/tech danc...

Re: Consider this before asking for suggestions to your rack

I see those threads more like invitations to social interactions. Most of those posters are not really in some dire need to get our advice. But it's nice to get some advice and it's fun to talk about modulars! But ok, if we're imposing rules for these social interactions we should perhaps se...

Re: Are these the same slider caps?

These aren't the same. The WMD caps specifically fit the LED faders in the image (think Pittsburgh primary oscillator sliders), while the other ones fit the "regular" metal style sliders, such as those on the Rampage.

Re: Help with choosing modules

I wouldn't worry *too* much about trying to avoid paying for something you might not use. Modular will surprise the hell out of you. Some guaranteed use modules will go dormant, and vice versa. Its always good to conceptualize and consider, but sometimes it can be a trap.

Re: Pitch to CV in 2020

My experience with pitch-CV is that it is possible to get reasonable tracking of a carefully played solo line on an instrument which is not too harmonically complex, such as a bass guitar or a lead synth line. I wouldn't expect much success with tracking a vocal. OTH, software solutions like Autotu...
